We are just creating more litter, and using the resources that are fast running out. We suck.

apollos 31st July 2002 16:50

As the human race is being more intelligent, a good handfullare alos dumbing down.

Why would you waste money on a disposable mobile phone when they are dirt cheap anyways?

Gonzotek 31st July 2002 17:00

Err, it's designed to be recyclable:
Quote:

By offering a $5 rebate to customers who want to dispose of their phones, Hop-On hopes to recycle used devices to new customers, saving on additional manufacturing costs and in effect, borrowing the strategy of disposable camera makers, which recycle cameras four to five times in new packaging.
Before condemning the company to hell for trying out a new idea, why not take a minute to actually get some background on them?

Additionally, these phones are much less of an environmental impact on Earth than traditional cell phones, do to their ultra-simple design. No memory, no lcd's, etc. These parts are usually made in countries that have no or low environmental restrictions by companies competing fiercly with each other.

they're a large difference between disposable cameras and phones. the cameras are sent to the manufacturer for developing, i doubt most people are going to bother with recycling their phone, since it's not a necessary part of its use. it seems to me that it would be a better idea to rent cellphones with a set amount of time on them, or the distributor of these disposable phones should have the user pay a $10 or $20 deposit to ensure the phone is returned so it can be reused

freakypablo 31st July 2002 18:41

Disposable cell phones?? That's pathetic.

Bilbo Baggins 31st July 2002 21:18

And who is going to use them? You can get a decent enough permanent phone for the same price.

fish 31st July 2002 23:42

It's been done. Many people probably don't remember this, but a few years ago, either Circuit City or Best Buy had this thing called "Divx" which is completely different from the divx we know and love today. Essentially, it was a dvd that cost about $5 and could be watched TWICE, at which point it became unusable, and was discarded. Thank goodness they stopped that program. They thought it would take the place of video rentals.

Trigear 1st August 2002 07:14

actually, that was exactly the same as the divx we all know and love today. it was just an earlier rendition. that's what divx was originally intended as: a movie rental substitute. disposable pay-per-view. then someone cracked it online and that was the end. now it's just a regular movie format like mpg and avi.

MetallichicA 1st August 2002 07:17

Ahhhh, I stand corrected then... I had misinformation somewhere.

<saving face> but uh... it's STILL different cuz uh... it's COOLER now that we can USE it more than TWICE... yeah </saving face>

Trigear 1st August 2002 07:23

that wasn't a correction, chica. that was just an addition. don't feel embarrassed. :)

Gonzotek 1st August 2002 12:47

No that's just wrong. Circut City Divx has nothing in common with the divx codec.

From the Divx Owners Association pages
Quote:

Divx (the name was derived from the company's name of Digital Video Express L.P.) was based on DVD-V, and boasted high-quality MPEG-2 digital video and Dolby Digital surround sound.
The divx codec uses mpeg4 techonology, while divx discs used the same primary technology as DVD's: mpeg2. Mpeg4 compresses and looks better and is the leading digital video tech right now (excluding nsv, of course ;).
