Poisonous Insects
There are two types of spiders that one has to worry about here in Santa Fe: the Black Widow and the Brown Recluse. I have seen both. Widows rarely leave their webs and usually aren't something you need to be afraid of. Brown Recluses, whose bite cause massive tissue damage and sometimes death, usually don't hang out in houses.
I just killed a spider that looked disturbingly like a Recluse in my house. It was running across my computer desk! Scared the shit out of me (I'm sitting in shorts). It looked different enough from other Recluses that it may have been some other type of non-harmful spider, but I'm still pretty freaked. Pray for Mojo... |
good luck. it's funny that black widows and brown recluses are the biggies in new mexico, says you, and yet they're the bad ones here in nj too. weird. a nationwide threat. what says windude to this? must be a government conspiracy.

Unless you actively hunt spiders for sport, black widows pose little threat.

[Lenny from The Simpsons voice]: Assault weapons are needed for today's "super" animals, like the flying squirrel, and the electric eel.

I know in Kansas the brown recluse is one of the most common spiders, thing is, they are very timid spiders and only bite if you trap them, IE...you are sleeping and roll over on them, in that case you usually end up with a hole in your skin that only grows with time, my uncle got bit and he didnt get it taken care of, now on the back of his leg it looks like somebody took and icecream scooper out of his leg....a black widow is more nervous system, where you get bit dont necissarily rot out or decay, but the venom attacks your nervous system, it can really mess you up, but honestly, i have not heard of too many people getting bit by black widows, mostly because they prefer a more outside life style.

You'd be surprised. I was in with a crowd of rednecks out in New Brunswick (just north of Maine) who would hunt house spiders with BB guns. Although the whole concept sounds absurd, it is disturbingly satisfying to see a spider explode in a puff of bodily... goop.
|
lmao rm' ..thats a funny picture. but rednecks with bbguns? cmon.. be realistic :D
i think we TNers would use shottys rather then bbs hehe. i had a brown recluse on my hand.. i simplt flicked it off into my coke. simple enough. my older sis had a huge ass blackwidow look alike.. but it was bigger... the body was as big as a quater and it wasnt a trantuala... |
Shotguns are reserved for squirrels.
|
Well, it was a joke.
|
'Bout the only thing to worry about here in Chicagoland is the Brown Recluse. Black Widow's can't survive up here over the winters. Neither can fire ants, since the ground usually freezes down 3-4' in a typical winter.
It just isn't nice for bugs here :) |
The only poisionous insects to beware of here in the U of K are bees, wasps and Labour politicians.
That said, I still have the mark on my hand from a bee sting i got 3 weeks ago. |

I for one am very glad to live where there's practically no animal or insect that can cause me any real harm! |
I've seen a couple of Dead Scarab look alikes down here in Plymouth, in the middle of the streat, a couple of million Wolf Spiders, crab spiders, and a spider that looks like sombody diving. Oh and a Garige full of BIG spiders with legs as long as my index finger.
|
wow, i should've pointed this out before! spiders aren't insects, they're arachnids, so the thread title's all wrong...
[/boring] |
i remember when i lived in new mexico. we had a problem every now and then. but the spiders will usually leave you alone. as long as you dont disturb them, or kill them on the first try (if you dont..they seek revenge:eek:)
|
technically, a spider isn't an insect, but I'm just being picky here.

I remember when I was in Oklahoma, one of my friends kid got stung about 4 times by a scorpian when he was sleeping, they used to tell us to check our boots before we put them on because the scorpians liked to crawl in them. I dont think there are scorpians here in kansas though.......are scorpians insects or arachnids? I cant remember if they have six or eight legs.
|
I know that spiders aren't insects. :hang: I was just really tired last night, and now it's too late to change it. :(
I suppose should tell you that my real name's not Sandman either. ;) |
Scorpions are arachnids. I love 'em to death!

In the UK, what is actually dangerous?
No earthquakes, volcanoes, spiders, sharks... LOL. I am safe. |

Daddy Longlegs Spiders
A father watched his daughter playing in the garden. He smiled as he reflected on how sweet and innocent his little girl was. Suddenly she just stopped and stared at the ground. He went over to her and noticed she was looking at two spiders mating. "Daddy, what are those two spiders doing?" she asked. "They're mating," her father replied. "What do you call the spider on top, Daddy?" she asked. "That's a daddy longlegs," her father answered. "So, the other one is a mommy longlegs?" the little girl asked. "No," her father replied. "Both of them are daddy longlegs." The little girl thought for a moment, then took her foot and stomped them flat. "Well, we're not having THAT sort of shit in our garden." |

No, I'm not one of those people who see a spider and assume it's a poisonous one. It was a real black widow. It freaked me out like hell. |
