Intelligent Numerical Sorting
 

Ok. I have a totally viable idea here.

I want an "intelligent" alphabetization algorithm that would put 2 before 10 (and IX after VIII, et cetera!). I really think that it's feasible to have this as a built in Winamp function - like a checkbox in the options dialog.

The reason I want this is because so many times a sequence of MP3's will be numbered, let's say, from "Song 1.mp3" to "Song 11.mp3". You'll end up hearing song 1, then song 10, then song 11, then song 2. I'm sure everyone knows what I'm talking about.

Well, I have a classical music archive and I run into this problem a lot. Roman numerals should also be accounted for. Oh, and I think track numbering and leading zeros (01 02 03..) suck.

One more thing:

I saw that a few people have suggested tracking how many times songs are played/completed, and the ability to sort your playlist according to this data - and I am WAY way in favor of that. It's less basic and less pure and rational and less necessary than my numeric sorting idea, but it would be extremely cool for those of use who always have our entire collections loaded in playlist. Just speculating.. :)

you are right. If track 2 came after track 1 then winamp would be awesome and is very needed. You guys shoudl do that!!

Having all those stats would be cool too. It is a simple option that should at least be possible...even if it was "off" by default it should definitly be there.

i just had this happen to me and it sucked. this should have been donw with winamp 1.3 or soemthing. this would be so easy and should be on the top of the priority list. This is so basic and simple. You are right "legit". any one else agree that such an easy thing to impliment should be done?

ive been thinking about this, and it kind of follows this whole track sorting thing. but how about there's an extra sorting option available, one that sorts songs by artist, then by album, then by track? that would be totally sweet. so if i have multiple songs from multiple artists, with multiple albums, i dont listen to just random songs, but in the order they were intended to be listened to by the artists. just a thought. :)

I agree with legit on his first post - the alphabetization algorith COULD use a bit of tweaking. Winamp isn't the only program to suffer this little anomaly *cough*Windows Media Player, anyone?*cough*, but it is rather obnoxious when you have a list with over 2000 songs, and not all of them are necessarily tagged with the same conventions in mind (IE with OSV's from games, 1-10, or 01-10, etc). Whassit take fore a little peace o' mind dese heyre daiys, eh?
