Find the "Plugin.ini" file in the Winamp Plugins directory, edit the file and remove stuff under "[NotSo Fatso]" (or remove the whole file if it does not work).

Yet it is a fact that the Ambience really requires a decent amount of CPU power.

The Ambience effect consumes a lot of CPU. Turn it down by dragging its slidebar to the leftmost. After doing so, the CPU consumption can dramatically drop down to normal.
