The key is...
The key is "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Winamp.exe\Shell", including all adjacent entries. But why don't you use the winamp config to deactivate this?

For system number one, the answer is pretty simple. I noticed you only had waveout plugin installed. This plugin uses pcm output and has an option that *intentionately* makes volume control not work....

This only happens if you set crossfade time...
This only happens if you set crossfade time longer then the length of the file you are trying to play... This is not a bug, but a problem with (your) settings. Open the config drawer and set cfade...

Creative soundcards have the same problems on...
Creative soundcards have the same problems on unix systems too, and the same sollution applies. Either use the app bundeled with the driver to emulate 5.1 channels, or use a 3'rd party input plugin...

2 bugs, of wich one really bothers me...
I am running an AMD XP 2400+
with 256 mb DDR
two 40 GB disks, DVD-rom,
Nvidia FX 5200 ultra with latest drivers and Directx9,
A C-Media 5.1 pci soundcard (disabled the on-board piece-of-junk)......
