I've played quite a few horror games over the years, and I have to say it's a toss up between the Resident Evil 1 remake for Gamecube, Silent Hill 2 - 4, and Fatal Frame 2. Resident Evil 3 isn't too shabby on the scare factor either.

It's interesting to compare quality vs quantity.

Resident Evil 5 is a much bigger game than L4D. Takes about 10 hours to beat your first time. More levels. More weapons. More modes. More content. Many things to come back for and unlock. I got a good 60 hours of total game play on RE5 before I moved on.

Left 4 Dead focuses on making just the gameplay experience itself and the fact it technically changes everytime you play the crux of the game. No messing around with unlockables and upgrades or some kind of currency/experience point system. Just go. Fewer extremely well-designed gameplay elements instead of the standard amount of passable ones.

L4D came out November 08. Resident Evil 5 came out March 09. I'm a huge RE fan who has been eating up everything RE since the original PS1 RE1. RE5 lasted me about a month. (including the Versus DLC) Even today, I'm still playing Left 4 Dead. Versus Mode in L4D is one of the most addictive and ingenious things to play ever. RE5 isn't bad, but it doesn't do much to make me keep playing after everything is finished and unlocked.

I love L4D cause it makes me want to play the game for the game. And nothing else. No fancy bs dangling in front of me to distract me from noticing when a game isn't really that great. Just shut up and play. It's awesome.

If you really gave up on L4D already, I take it you barely gave Versus a try. It's the reason to play.

And the only laziness on Valve's part is with the 360 version, where there are many issues and glitches still present. Main concern: Powershots are still in the 360 version.
