Winamp is really a pretty mild example of software that will install a bunch of crap you didn't want. It always seemed to be to be highly ethical to give you the options it does. Also, I've never run into anything you accidentally installed that wasn't reversible. What it installs as far as toolbars and other crap you might not like is removable from the control panel cleanly.
You can tell these developers are trying to make a living. You can also tell they are not trying to screw your computer up. It seems, so far, that it's important to them. You can tell from all the security patches.
