My point is that a driver with a DUII isn't appreciably riskier than a driver with 2 speeding tickets or that ran a stop sign.
But we don't treat it the same way.
A driver with a DUI is about as likely to crash as a driver with 2 speeding tickets. Half of the fatal accidents in the country are not alcohol related, so would you feel much different if the driver had been sober?
The drunk that wipes someone out is far more reviled than the guy with 2 speeding tickets, but they are about evenly risky. Maybe Virginia's got the right idea. Reckless driving is still somehow less than drunk driving, even though it's more dangerous.
Weight of things we do and what the penalties for them are isn't square. If you toss the drunk in jail, the guy that blows the stop sign and the speeder should go too. It looks like Virginia's got that straight.
