Introduction/Request
Hello. I'm pretty new to all this, but let me start with who I am and why I'm here
I am an IT Technician with Lock Haven University and one of my responsibilities is to service the equipment in our radio station as well as support our student in the use of it. My experience is mainly hardware related and I can't say I have a great understanding of the software side of things.
The station is fairly well equipped, but we can not afford to run an over-air broadcast at this time. So for the past several years (since before I started here) the University has been using Shoutcast for our listeners. Recently I've been tasked with helping find a solution to broadcast to more listeners. Currently we're using the cheapest means possible (read: Free). Now the powers that be want to increase the number of listeners and possibly the quality too. The software we're using is Winamp version 5.541 and Shoutcast DNS version 1.9.8/win32. It runs on a Lenova Thinkcenter with Windows XP 32bit, but this could easily be upgraded if necessary.
Our needs are simply this: take an audio stream from our control room and broadcast that over the Internet (or intra-net) to as many people as possible with a preferable quality close to FM broadcast, or better. We have no need for an Auto DJ or any type of playlist control at this time. We don't need a lot of bells and whistles.
I've browsed the Internet for hosting services but it seems difficult to find one that's reliable and not a scam. And being a University with a fair amount of resources I'm wondering if this is something we can do ourselves. Again, I'm not familiar with that aspect of things yet so I don't even know if thats possible.
Given what I've told you so far, is there anything anyone can suggest to help set us on the right track?
Thanks for your help.
