When the recession hit, these guys took a hit, but the recession is over for the 1%. It has been for a couple years. My brother claims he's back to even. His house is back to being worth what it was, Investments have recovered.

That isn't the way it's working. They're buying commodities futures instead of making real investments.
The GDP is higher than it ever was and if the distribution of wealth was the way it was in 1980, we'd have a happy middle class instead of worrying about whether middle class exists anymore. I would point out that if you were a painter in 1980 you were middle class.
