Sorry for bumping an old thread but I know a way to fix this issue, that is to download the in_openmpt.dll plugin for Winamp (which is in libopenmpt-0.2.4259-beta7-bin-win32.7z).

http://lib.openmpt.org/libopenmpt/

Installation instructions.

1. Uninstall the in_mod.dll plugin.

2. Unzip the in_openmpt.dll into the plugins folder.

3. Unzip the libopenmpt_settings.dll into the main winamp folder (Not the plugins folder)

And that should solve the xm error problem and greatly improves the sound quality for all types of mod files since the plugin is based on OpenMPT.
