I believe you are correct with that assumption. The information is that the file type is "not supported". I tried to change the ftyp header information in the winamp encoded m4a-files with a hex-editor accordingly to simluate an iTunes file. The result was, that I didnt get the error message and the unit tried to start playing the file. However it paused at 00:00:00. So I guess something else has to be changed as well.
