Well, yes for layout, if you use it for data it is okay. There is a big twilightzone for what is, and what is not though, but intentionally place items like headerimage and menus into tables would be wrong.

But it's a nice looking site

On the other hand, these reccomandations come from the organisation which have almost the dullest pages in the world, so following ALL of their reccomandations, you end up with pages looking like this one:

And have you ever tried to find info at w3c? It ain't very easy
