Ive got FireFox as the default browser on all my systems (for good reason), and Winamp(5) is the only app that still pulls up IE for browser links.

Because the browser bulit into Winamp uses IE. IE opens links in IE. And according to the developers that will never change. Sorry.

Is there a partnership with microsoft or something? I only registered to ask questions about a L***x version and found that it's a banned word! There are no media players anywhere near the same level as winamp for L***x systems, more people would feel the need to pay for winamp if they had the choice to use it over the less userfriendly alternatives available to non-windows people.

Well seeing as it's called WINamp... why would it be on Linux? Although I must agree with you, there's nothing near as good as Winamp on Linux, or any other OS for that matter. But hey, it's a lot of work to do a conversion to another OS, and keep up with it. Really though I'm quite happy with it being on Windows alone... although I did have to thusly so use Windows 98SE on my Jukebox... it's still all good.

Anyways... too bad they don't support Firefox as much as everyone here in the forums do... maybe there's a plugin, somewhere... The reason they support IE soley is probably because it only works on Windows, and everyone with Windows has IE.

No, but IE is built into Windows. Winamp is a Windows application. Therefore someone running Winamp should have IE on their system. And like most other programs it just embedded IE.

Winamp won't be ported to Linux due to a lack of resources. It's not some international conspiracy with Microsoft against Linux users. Don't be so paranoid.

The IE control is available on all systems and when the minibrowser, etc was added that was all that there was (not sure if Netscape allowed for control embedding) but when you code on the Win32 platform (aka Windows) it's best to go with the common denominator and funnily enough that's the IE control.

Things won't change, a linux version of the 2.x/5.x core won't happen and i'll be replying to stupid threads like these that will come

When I had windows I wanted to uninstall IE and Media Player etc, but there's no uninstall option. They also pop up at any opportunity, it's like you're being forced to use them, even though they're not as useful or reliable as other programs you might want to use.

the problem really is that the way they are designed is that they provide core features which other developers can use such as the IE control which they can know will be there without having to worry about redistributables and all that which you need for other browser controls. it's really out of convenience and that as it comes down to it, IE is the common denominator.

not much can really be done since it's not viewed for recent winamp development to change/break things which are known to be working fine as they are. such is the way of things

I read somewhere that someone was working on a way to embed mozilla/netscape into programs in exactly the same way that IE did; that is, the only thing that would need to be changed to support it on the programmer's end is to change the rescource that is requested.

It was something about someone wanting to use netscape inside of AOL instead of IE, by hacking one variable to point to the mozilla control. I can't find any link but I am sure that someone was working on it.
