Polls on Winamp.com

Check out the homepage. In the lower left, there are a bunch of polls asking things like, "How much would you be willing to fork out for DVD Playback in Winamp?". I assume these could be possible directions the AOL dev team is taking, but some of them worry me, like the one that asks if I want Windows Media Center-like functionality or "Would you like to see Winamp work more closely with Wild Tangent on cool new features such as visualizations, etc.?". I do like "How do you feel about the Video Ads being placed before Nullsoft provided online Videos and Audio?", but I seriously doubt AOL will actually remove those ads based on a poll. I hope AOL actually looks at the responses and uses them in making the RIGHT decision before fucking over Winamp, but I'm not holding my breath. At least I still have 5.092.

well winamp.com is run by AOL (while the forums are by craig) so they should be looking!

I wonder if the price will go up after they add dvd support...
@ $50 for winamp, LOL

I'd like to know what these polls are really all about - what's their real purpose?

I'm gonna go through each poll at the order I got them:

1. Would you like to see a Embedded Version of the Media Library on the web site to provide easy access to the latest nullsoft content?

Not important at all. I said "whateva". 52% out of 23 people said that...

2. What instant messaging service to you use most frequently?

I said IRC. But please, don't add anything like this to Winamp. If anything, it should just be left to the plug-in coders. This has nothing to do with what Winamp is.

3. How much would you be willing to fork out for DVD Playback in Winamp?

This is the one I really wanna talk about. Yeah. We need this. I don't know how long it would get good DVD playback with Winamp, but I think Winamp will one day die if they don't begin developing this. The current results:

4,186 votes so far:
  • $50 - 2%
  • $35 - 1%
  • $25 - 2%
  • $15 - 7%
  • Nothing - 88%

Pretty disappointing if you ask me. Yeah, WinDVD might be all you need if you play DVDs every once in a while, but if you got a laptop and are on the road, there's a good chance you might be sick of using a separate media player. And even if you don't have a laptop, DVD playback is still important. So to see 88% say they would't pay jack, that just sucks.

This is not something easy for the developers to do very well. I would definitely pay $35 or $40 for this. Offer a free version without DVD playback and then Pro version for $15. Would be so nice to have Winamp really nail this.

4. Would you like to be able to rip your CD's into Coding Technologies AACPlus format in Winamp PRO?

This would be nice. This format is just getting more and more popular.

5. How do you feel about the Video Ads being placed before Nullsoft provided online Videos and Audio?

Well ya gotta give a little to get a little. That sums it up. It's nice, I don't mind these type of ads.

6. In General what do you think of the Web site?

Not on fire, but pretty good. Way better than most, that's for sure.

7. Would you like to be able to burn MP3 format to CD directly from Winamp?

I guess this means to create data CDs with MP3s in them, for playback on CD players that support MP3 format... This would be great and I don't think it'd be hard at all.

8. Would you like to see more content types available in the media library like Game Trailers, Sports, Movie Trailers, News etc.

As long as all this stuff remains low-key down there on the right side of the media library, without any pop-ups or annoying stuff like Real Player, QuickTime and WMP, I'm all for more content. Though I rarely even use that. But hey it's cool.

9. Do you currently subscribe to, or purchase, music from an online music store?

Current results at 234 votes:
  • No - 43%. You can bet most of these also fall under this next answer:
  • I get music for free from the underground - 39%
  • iTunes - 5%
  • Napster - 0% - LOL
  • Other - 12%

10. How many digital music files do you have in your personal library?

What the hell is the point of this question?

11. Would you like to see Winamp work more closely with Wild Tangent on cool new features such as visualizations, etc.?

This stuff is really stupid if you ask me. Some people like it though, but it's hardly a priority. Get DVD playback and 30 more useful features before you do this. And Wild Tangent has spyware in it, no?

12. Would you like to see Winamp add the functionality to be your Home Media Server for DVR/PVR, Pictures, and Media much like the Windows Media Center Edition?

This should also be a priority, almost as important as like DVD playback.

Whoa that took like 5 minutes too long...

I hope this is a sign that we're gonna start seeing more development with Winamp.

There needs to be a more negative response to the wild tangent question. No! Winamp should not hang about that scum. WildTanget is the bad kids who hang around the stop 'n shop, play with gasoline, and drink robitussin all night to get buzzed. Don't get involved with that adware crap.

Why does an Audio player Need Video????? I'm personally glad it's optional.... I'm very worried that this player will turn into a player known as "The Core DVD Media Player for Windows" Because that's the track Winamps on..... Winamp may not be bloated now.... But by the sounds of that poll it will be.... I have always kept 2 light weight players.... An Audio And a Video....

The first time (years ago) I was delighted to see winamp becoming a free player. It was something not so common in those days to see a very good and stable program being free. I became kinda winamp addict through the years even though I like exploring new media players and stuff all the time. I always had winamp installed no matter what. Now it's back to being moneyware.
Now with all these polls I'm getting a little worried. Winamp has all the basic features for free right now, but when they realise that cd ripping, burning, dvd playback, and on-line music stores, are becoming the new standards in popular media players, I'm worried none of these features will be available for free.
In case you haven't noticed some popular players give you free cd ripping and burning (for example real-one and media player) and more are turning to that. I just hope winamp won't go the other way.
