Jim Carrey, of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love", from The Cable Guy.
"El Tango De Roxanne" version of The Police's "Roxanne", from Moulin Rouge. I'm sure there are others

"Jingle Bells" by the Barking Dogs.
![]() Actually STP did an excellent live cover of the Beatles - "Revolution" at that "Lennon/New York City" tribute concert. |

I just remembered a few doozies. The cooks at my job listen to Mexican radio stations in the kitchen, and sometimes there are traditional Mexican arrangements of modern pop music. The top three were covers of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "Heart Of Glass" by Blondie, and the theme to the old Spider-Man cartoon (Spider-man, Spider-man, does whatever a spider can...). All of these had accordian and tuba as part of the instrumentation. "Hear Of Glass" was sung by a man.

It's been mentioned here recently; Guns N' Roses cover of Live and Let Die. They actually made the song good.
Also, Quiet Riot's cover of Slade's Cum On Feel The Noize (which was mediocre) was an improvement. The QR version made it onto the GTA: Vice City soundtrack |

Now I can't believe no one has mentioned ASTRONOMY! Metallica's cover of that was 100000000x better than BÖC's original. I love the part right before the end when Lars does the pounding bass drum and then the finale. That has gotta be the definition of a cover song. Metallica sure knows how to rock. Although I hate the personality of the band. Especially you-know-who. The little drummer boy. Yeah you know who I'm talking about. VH's cover of You Really Got Me is a big improvement. Tool's Zeppelin cover of No Quarter is great too. I like STP's cover of Dancing Days, as well as Revolution. Legalize It. Liberate It. Free The People of the United States. Free The Herbs Of The World! |

I thought that Travis did a good version of hit me baby one more time. And I also heard this version of Gin and Juice today, that sounded good and was acoustic and probably sung by white guys. I wish I knew who sung it. Will post again if I can find it.

Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".
Manic Street Preachers - Suicide is Painless (Theme from M*A*S*H) Any version of "Hey Joe" that you care to name, but especially Jimi Hendrix' version. And Nick Cave's version. Oasis' version of The Who's My Generation. Probably Liam's best vocal performance, but loses points for being too close to the original. I'm sure there are more... I once heard a track on a guitar magazine cover CD that was a rendition of Eruption by VH that was better and more powerful than the original! Also...
Sunday Bloody Sunday done by the Smashing Pumpkins live. Hound dog - Hendrix Stand Inside Your Love - Hendrix Knocking on Heavens Door - GnR Mrs Robinson - Nirvana Marigold - Dave Grohl (Yes I know he wrote it but it was written by Nirvana )My Way - Sex Pistols [others go here] "We think science is interesting and if you disagree, you can fuck off." |

Willy Nelson's "Always on my mind" by The Pet Shop Boys
I gotta second John M's choice of "Smells like teen spirit" by Tori Amos. Hard to believe it's the same song that put Nirvana on the map! Tori Amos also did a cover of Eminem's "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" that is just plain freaky. I've always been a fan of Erasure's covers of ABBA hits like "Gimme Gimme Gimme", "Take a chance on me", "Voulez-vous", "SOS" and others. |

The 'excellent cover versions' thread.
I can't believe there wasn't a thread for cover-versions. What are your favourites:
Fidget - Living on Video (orig Trans X) Nathalie DeBorah - Living on Video (orig Trans X) Curve - Overground (orig Siouxsie & the Banshees) Carter USM - Rent (orig Pet Shop Boys) Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind (can't even remember the orig)! Carter USM - Panic (orig The Smiths) Carter USM - Hit (orig The Sugarcubes) Curve - I Feel Love (orig Donna Summer) The Cure - World in My Eyes (orig Depeche Mode) (cheers to Twilightseer for the above). I've got loads but strangely I can't think of any more (the hot sweaty days in the office do take their toll). |

Mr. Jones, you rock. i was about to do this too.
i have to agree with Cylob on PetShopBoys and The Cure, both really good. also, there's an above post on Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams, excellent. if you can, check out the soundtrack to Not Another Teen Movie, all covers from New Wave 80's. some suck, but there are ones that are good. |
