.pls/shoutcast association problem

God I feel like an idiot for asking this but it's driving f*cking crazy. I cannot connect to shoutcast .pls streams by clicking on them. Winamp doesn't do a damn thing. I have tried using 2.76 and 3.0. I've uninstalled them and reinstalled them several times. I'm using XP and I've tried disabling Norton firewall. I've uninstalled Real Audio's fine piece of software hoping that would do something. I've tried deleting and re-establishing file associations dealing with .pls files in both Windows and Winamp. To no avail. Basically what happens is, upon new file association establishment, it will give me the Save/Open option. I choose open, then I choose which Winamp as the app to run it, then nothing happens. I can "Save Link As" to my desktop and then drag that resulting file into winamp and that WILL WORK. This happens on both 2.76 and 3.0 versions of winamp. This sounds similar to the problems that people were having back with IE 5.5. I have XP and IE 6.0 now. I can't find any info on anyone having problems similar to mine. This is so frustrating because YEARS ago I had NO problems connecting to streaming media from Shoutcast when it first was beginning!! I'm probably going to get flamed for being such a f*cking retard, but if someone could throw me a bone, I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you

Are you running XP SP1?

With the service pack comes a handy tool called Set Program and Access Defaults where you can establish everything down to your default Media Player.

Well I installed SP1 and checked out the Set Program and Access Defaults utility. It looks nice, but there's really nothing there to help me. I am flabbergasted. This is driving me insane because I used to connect to Shoutcast with 9.x and much older versions of winamp. I have to believe it's something with my own system though. The file association seems to be correct though. I've installed Winamp 2.8 and now when I click on a "Tune In" button from the web page it appears in the playlist as "shoutcast-playlist[1]" and just sits there. It does not play and when I hit play it looks as if it attempts to connect but then does not with no error messages or anything to indicate why. However, now, if I drag the "Tune In" button to the playlist, it then resolves to several entries, any of which I can manually begin playing by double clicking or hitting play. Can this make any sense whatsoever? It almost looks like it's not a file association and perhaps something else.

Well thank you for your help none the less.

Thanks

Try emptying your Temporary Internet Files in your browser.

HA! As I said, I deserve to be flamed for being so dumb! I can usually work through any problem and I probably would have eventually, but you had a good idea with doing some spring cleaning. I went through and scoured XP using various utilities as well as trashing everything in Internet Temp and other folders. Then I did a whole batch of windows updates and search and destroyed spy-ware that was littered all over my system using Ad-Aware. Needless to say after all that, I feel better and Winamp works like it should with Shoutcast now. Thank you so much for the pointer. I just needed someone to knock on my head and ask if anyone was home!

Thanks!
