What is a Dj?

I grew up on the idea that a DJ was someone who mixed vinyl. Now I guess a DJ is someone who uses a stylistic approach to mix verious forms of audio media... Anyway Before you call yourself a DJ you need to realize that there is a differnce between setting up your playlist to crossfade songs and using decks...Its like you cant call yourself a DJ untill you have mastered some Basic BeatMatching, and developed your own little style... There are so many casters that call themselves DJ's and all they do is play songs... Anyway I was just wondering what other people thought of this...

Yup. Except the term was coined with a radio station "disk jockey" in mind.... radio just happened to be using vinyl at the time. So now I sposed a "DJ" is still someone who slings tracks at a broadcasting/unicasting "radio" station.

Being a DJ in the club/rave scene (or whatever) was simply taken from radio.... not vice versa.

yes a DJ is first someone who plays music for a public audience, that's it, there was no such thing as beat matching in the 40s but there were DJ's.
