How to fix the blue video bug

All credit for this solution must go to MukiMuki, who must have spent ages working this out. This is not technically a fix, but a workaround, although it works fine:
  • FIRST uninstall any version of the Nimo codec pack you may have installed. This is not the actual cause of the problem, but seems to prevent ffdshow from working properly. And it's generally icky.
  • Download the latest alpha version of ffdshow from here (you want the January 3, 2003 version), and install it.
  • Start->Programs->ffdshow->Configuration->Codecs. UNCHECK the "YV12" option under "Supported Output Colorspaces". Screenshot.
This will fix the problem for any codecs that ffdshow supports and has enabled (by default all versions of DivX and XviD). Enjoy . The underlying bug is still with Winamp3 and I'm working with the developers to get it fixed.

cool!

is ffdshow's divx codec better than the one from www.divx.com?
or is it maybe the exact same?
I currently only use ffdshow for xvid but I don't know if I should use it for divx or anything else aswell cos I dont know which one's best...

I think the decoding quality of ffdshow is fairly equal to the commercial divx codec. The advantage with ffdshow is it has the post-processing filters which can make videos look quite a lot better. The answer is: try it and see .

The thing to note is, the blue video fix will only work for divx if ffdshow is handling divx.

And this news just in:
[18:37:49] <@bas> k, next build you'll be able to toggle acceptance of yv12 and a couple others
In english: blue video bug should be fixed in the next internal . Or at least fixable with a winamp3 option.

Caveat: This does NOT work for recent WMV files, because ffdshow doesn't support them. The fix in the next version of Winamp3 will however work with everything.

This is the current link in the FAQ...

ctkatz: I had that problem while Nimo was still installed, no there isn't another way to edit it, you'll have to try and remove all the codecs and reinstall till it works.

Oh, sweet jesus thanks for the fix! I havent tired it yet because Im at work, but now I can stop using WMP! Woohoo!

And as far as the FFShow being better or not, well, I downloaded a screener of Red Dragon, 1.4 gigs, and it looks AMAZING with ffshow.

Before I knew that the FFShow filter was needed on top of Divx, it showed it all weird, and it was almost enough to make you throw up. The way the motions worked...ah!

Well....

Basically, ffdshow gives you two advantages over installing (or installing with) normal DivX.

1 - Extra options. There are TONS of things you can edit directly at the codec level. We're talking HSL, perspective correction, post procesing, sharpness filters up the wazoo, custome processor-based re-sizing, new filters, etc.

2 - SPEED. This is a big one, and the main reason I use ffdshow. It offers an IDCT selection option, and its Simple option is a LOT faster than a standard DivX installation. We're talking a drop of %75 system resources to like the 20-30% level or BELOW. Supporting any processor extention you have doesn't hurt, either.

The only problem is that ffdshow is a DECODER. In other words, if you want to MAKE a DivX file download X-Vid or commerical DivX. ^__^

Wow, I wasnt aware of the advantages of FFDSHOW. Thanks for the enlightenment. I will have to play with the settings, and try it on my girlfriends computer to see if it helps her speed wise.

Thanks for the explanation (and the workaround).

Although I don't have the blue video problem, just for the hell of it I wanted to see what this was all about and decided to install ffdshow. Same problem here... "msvcd70.dll" not found. But I found "msvcr70.dll" and guess where? The Winamp3 main folder. Anyway, copied it over to the ffdshow install directory itself and all went well.

But, now that you mention it, I also have the same file in my Unreal Tournament 2003 directory as well.

i want to add this because i feel this is pretty important. after you install this codec pack, RE-install nimo without any of the video codecs. i had noticed that when playing my mp3s im wmp and winamp 2 and 3, after the first second, the playback slows down. some may not notice it, but to me, those songs don't sound right.

Winamp3 doesn't use DirectShow audio codecs, so reinstalling Nimo won't make a blind bit of difference to audio playback. I don't recommend installing Nimo, it's better to install the codecs individually.

plauge, i think it's because i had installed nimo previously and some things ran through there (some of the audio codecs). i'm not knowlegeable enough to change them manually. i should have said for those who installed the nimo audio codecs.

I've never managed to get MPEG2 to play with any degree of predictability - your best bet is to use a DVD player such as WinDVD.

By the way, your sig is huuuge . See here for the sig usage guidelines (Summary: please keep your graphical sigs to a 12,500 pixel max or 15k file size).

WIN 2K

OK first off, THANK YOU THANK YOU to MUKIMUKI for handling this issue for us.

I've got WIN 2k. I had the MSVCR70 problem, and I took it from Unreal 2, and put it into the directory that had the FFSHOW.EXE installer, and everything went fine.

Then I tried to access the configuration, and it told me that it couldn't find FFSHOW.AX.

I fixed this by re-installing ffshow with the MSVCR70.dll file in WINNT\SYSTEM

This time I could access the configuration just fine.

It's a small thing, and you probably all figured it out without me, but there could be some dumb guys (or girls) like me, left who are helped with this bit of hand holding, so here it is.

Im trying to fix the blue video bug with ffdwhow and when I try to open the ffdshow.ax to use the configurer I get this error:

Error loading ffdshow.ax

One of the library files needid to run this application cannot be found.

Can anyone help me get this to work?

I am n00b so please don't be mean to me

I read the other posts and could not find the dll anywhere. If I could only get it Im sure I could get it to work.

Strange thing is...the blue bug just started happening and Ive been using WA3 for months now. ???

This fix is ok, works at random for me. Sometimes it will work for old wmv files, sometimes it wont. Newer made ones it doesnt fix at all. I think it was said someplace before. Any idea when winamp will release a fixed version of winamp3? What I normally do is just play them in Windows Media Player. At least till the dev's release a version that fixes it.

It's fixed in the latest internal builds. Specifically: The option is there but still on in 497, and it's off (i.e. fixed) in 498, which should be released next week. It's also fixed in Winamp 2.9a13, FWIW.

Is build #497 on the website? If so is it possible to change the filename a little, be easier to see if the file changed.

No, 497 is internal. The latest public build is 495. Public builds can be found here.

Done that ...

Hi,

I stumbled over this solution via a posting of Nunzio390 and it was all very clear and straight-forward, BUT ...

I still got the same problem.
I WONT unassign Wiamp3 as my default player, but I still want to get rid of the problem.

Maybe it's a freak-problem, but WMP (on a friends PC) plays it well, after grabbing a extra codec. (Which one? Donno!)

Maybe you can check this vid's for trying?

fixed my blue vid problem...

Hey everyone, I had the same "blue video" problem as everyone else... I read all the threads, watched the "sample" vids, and compared the screen shots to some of my discolored videos... it was exactly the same tint problem. Finding no solution I started to play with fddshow and totally screwed it up... the colors were getting better and worse and eventually the video stopped all together. So I uninstalled winamp then fddshow. Then I reinstalled winamp (but not fddshow). Now it works great. As far as I can tell it was all fddshow (I didnt change anything else). And it wasnt just reinstalling winamp that did it because I've uninstalled and reinstalled it a thousand times before that with no luck.

My system specs:

Windows XP Home Edition
Intel Pentium 4 - 2.4 Ghz
60GB hard drive
512MB DDR Ram
32MB DDR Nvidia GeForce4 (Video)
SoundMAX Integrated Digital (Audio)

My Video Codecs:

Xvid Mpeg-4
Cinepak Codec by Radius Inc.
Divx Mpeg-4 (Fast-Motion)
Divx Mpeg-4 (Low-Motion)
Divx 5.0
Huffyuv lossless codec (HFYU)
Indeo codec by Intel
Indeo I.263 video driver
Indeo video 5.10
Microsoft RLE Codec
Microsoft Video 1

Note: I've never had the evil nimo codec pack

My Audio codecs (although I'm not sure how they'll help):

Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3
IMA ADPCM
Microsoft ADPCM
Microsoft CCITT G.711
Microsoft GSM 6.10
DSP Group TrueSpeech
Divx
Spiro Lab Telecom
Indeo audio software
Voxware Compression Toolkit
Divx Audio Compressor
Windows Media Audio

Well... Hope that helps...
