Choose Your Own Adventure Books...

Has anyone ever read those choose your own adventure books? I used to read them every day in 6th grade. We had a huge selection at my school. I just thought it was cool how you had no idea what could happen until you tried it, then you could cheat and go back and re do it if you died.

Heh, escapism at its best! I read these a lot during the long, hot summer days of yesteryear. Good times.

I was away for a while.
But I'm feeling much better now.

I was a big fan of those in grade school also. I wonder why nobody took to developing these little gems into larger epics. I remember the books being quite short, leaving the reader wanting more at the end.

I thought that those usually sucked. high intensity, but otherwise just cheap plot twists (sorry, i read a lot)

Yeah, they definetily were to short. A 500 page epic choose your own adventure would be the coolest book ever. (I usually tried to kill myself)

Yeah, the plots usually were generic, but the idea was fun anyway. Damn i read alot of those.

All it would take is some time and effort on the part of a decent writer, or a team of writers. They could develop a 1000+ page moster epic with dozens of possible endings. I'd definately buy this.

I used to like those, but the plots were very cheap and the choices were two-dimensional

those books kicked ass. once, i got stuck in a time warp. the text read as follows:

on pg 98:

oh, no! you are stuck in a time warp! Turn to Page 67 to see what happens!

on pg 67:

oh, no! you are stuck in a time warp! Turn to Page 98 to see what happens!

I always wound up with either the crappy ending where nothing gets revealed in the plot, or where the protagonist(s) get killed.

/\ that's fun too.

once, there was a VERY dumb 'resposne' to a choice...it was a crappy ripoff of the Isaac Asimov (i think) book where some doctors are shrunk down and put in tiny subs so they can be injected into a person and fix something.

anyhoo- at one part it said "do you turn left or right?"

If you choose incorrectly, you suddenly feel hot and roll down the windows. You remember you are in a liquid and drown.

I totally forgot about those books until I saw this thread! Those things were so cool, I used to read 'em all the time. Reading them cover-to-cover was weird, lol.

Certainly good times.
