dedicated DSP machine

I'm considering purchasing a new machine just for storing mp3s and streaming them to my server.

What is the recommended processor and memory requirements for such a machine. Note that I won't be getting external connections to that machine. Just broadcasting to a separate server. I'll prolly only require WinXP, WWWinamp, and WA with a DSP running. I'm thinking
1.8GHz or lower
256MB RAM
Big ass HD

suggestions? Is this maybe too much power? should i have a weaker processor or less memory and save money?

and comments appreciated, you are were so helpful last time thanks for the help if I hadn't said it yet.

to encode mp3's u dont need a powerful system, a 500Mhz, 256MB Ram system would run it fine

also u look as if u want to do the system well, if so i recommend you try out www.spacialaudio.com and check out sam as an alternative to using winamp to broadcast

Some things I'm having trouble understanding.

- is this just software? or is it a hardware thing with custom software
- does it have support for song requests over the web?
- any idea what the system reqs for either SAM or SimpleCast are?

Hmm...I guess the SAM website must be down otherwise I am sure you would go there and find out the specs on your own.

Or wait...Google must be down again.

I couldnt see the specs there on the website.
and i was hoping someone could speak from experience, I trust it more than a manufacturer's suggestion.

haha. Well. I wouldn't see why you'd wish to stream at 56K because at that rate you could only support 1 listner! at 28K. I recomend getting a fast ISP then you'd be able to support more listners.

I recomend any pentium proccessor with at least 1.8gigahertz
128meg of DDR memory minimum. LOTTA Disk space err lets do 80gigs!

G force card: doesn't matter which one.
and any old soundcard, non soundblaster related

I don't understand why streaming to a server at Bean-net at 56k will mean I can have one listener at 28k.

And I'm on cable which is the best I do right now.
I plan on a 120GB HD and why do you think I'm going to need a G force? I won't even have the monitor connected to it half the time.

1. custom software, no hardware required.

2. has support for requests. Take a look at my SAM site: http://request.talksoftnetwork.com

Looks good... did that require alot of custom coding or was most of it plugnplay? I can do custom stuff if I have to, but I'd prefer not to.

Most of it is plug-n-play. Some of it is custom work.

DJHotIce, like myself, started with the default PHP samweb interface provided with SAM2.

Where you go from there, is up to you.

Compare DJHotIce site with my site and you'll notice the similarities.
