Lasgo? Can't stand it. Personally it all seems too shallow. there's plenty of CHEESE in Dance music, and I'll define that for you: Ace of Bass, Real McCoy, La Bushe, and just about anything that got airplay in the early 90s. Cheese like that gave good clear techno a bad name. (sorry to fans, but the rabbit hole goes a hell of a lot deeper and farther than that)
Now then? What to recommend? Ameoba Assassin: Pile Driver (summer grayed out mix) Almost all Paul van Dyk, INCLUDING THE KICKASS REMIX OF 1998 by Binary Finary!!! Most of DJ Icey's work is pretty good too. Paul Oakenfold's essential mixes, and his compilations are very decent aswell. Never forget that the main stream Dance scene is but a shadow of the underground. If you want good electronica you will dig for it. Its there. Don't be afraid of the culture either. Not into MDMA or LSD? No problem. There's a strong movement of so called purists who claim that the music is the drug, and no other substance, but that which the music itself produces is needed. I'm part of that group. I've been called alot of things, but the truth of it is that for me, the music takes me farther, and to greater clarity then any artificial chemical could ever do. Embrace the human machine without fear, and without running from any reality you may stumble across. <= that has been taken by many to mean "load up on chemicals and go where they will take you" Me? That means "Load up on the music and go where it will take you." True Techno is about the struggle between man and machine. It's underlying philosophy is that of finding the balance between technology and humanity's core emotions. [love for example] Here's a quote from a story I wrote. I don't subscribe to the philosophy as a whole here. It's just an illustration, and a way of thinking used by a few characters in my story, which is not finished. "The Teknos, in brief, is the fundamental element of technology. It is the force behind it, our development of it and use of it. It is not a static constant beyond our control, but is defined by humanity as a whole, although it must co-exist with the Logos (the meaning) to fully be realized. In short for the Teknos to exist in full we humans must learn to define it within the meaning of our own existence. Neither relying fully on it, nor denying its use, or core utility. If we can define it as part of our core existence then it will become so close to us that we see through it, that is, it will fall below the focal point of our reality, and some may one day deny its existence altogether." ~ From the writings of Nos Tehbi (See also my sig) |

I feel the same way Deep Electric. I dont want to go to a rave and do a punch of drugs, I want the music to affect me, not some worthless drug. I never knew there was a mainstream techno, all I have ever herd on the mainstream radio was darude - sandstorm. And it want "horrible". Would you say DJ Sasha was mainstream seeing I got his CD when I was in a boarders book store? Just wondering.
Well I must say there is some damn good techno on the various shoutcast streams I have listend to so far. But some seems to be just the same damn thing, and that makes me sad, like everyone is using the same proven formula (Pop music) and not doing anything differnt. So I like the drone zone stream, crazy ambiance music. enjoy |

a lot of ambient can sound the same too.
As with all music you have to filter out what you don't like and listen to the rest. Quote:

That's what pisses me off about piano music, all pianos sound the same! WTF?
![]() I don't mind if they use the same instruments as long as the melodys and harmonys are unique and done well. |

I like a good trance album, Out There And Back is good material. However, the formula's getting a bit worn-out. On your average trance track the synths will have 'that sound', the percusssion will have 'that sound', there'll be a break in the middle. It's becoming all too predictable.
Trance artists seem to be stuck in a rut. |

Pick up BT's latest album, Emotional Technology, for some refreshment. I don't even think any of this can be classified as trance though, heh.
Other unconventional trance artists are: Way Out West, Hybrid, Deepsky |

Emotional Technology's one of those rare hybrid albums - it reminds me of FC Kahuna/Machine Says Yes. Circles & Knowledge of Self sound like techno, Communicate & Paris - definitely trance, Superfabulous - electroclash. Not sure what Somnambulist is (electro pop)? I haven't heard the rest yet, no doubt there's a drum n bass track in there somewhere!
An interesting album of great variety, plenty of nobbly bits to throw you. If you haven't already, try Luke Slater/Alright on Top & Pet Shop Boys/Disco 3. |

I would classify knowledge of self more as hip-hop but whatever. Nothing really DnB but there are some tracks that I would consider alternative rock on there. Check out his previous album too, "Movement in Still life" for more diverse musical fun.

So what's that - hip hop, trance, techno, electroclash, almost a mix album. Funny though, every track has the same polished percussion.
Here's another totally whacked-out album: ![]() AMG just classified it as 'electronica'. They had to really, every track's a different genre. |
