Wich one do you recommend that would kick some good a*s?

Judo
Tae kwon do
Full contact
Kickboxing
...

i jsut brain farted on what is is called, but do,...oh! (spelt like it sounds) moy tie! that is awesome! boxking, kickboxing, and streetfighting (grappling)! Ninnjitsu is cool too.

Jujitsu teaches what works irl. (Used by japanese police even today) Ninjitsu teaches stealth combat. Jeetkundo isn't too bad was well. For traditional styles go for Okinawan.

Depends on your reason for learning.

If it's self defense then judo is probably best and will become an effective technique in a short amount of time. It relies heavily on throws and locks and is aimed more at controling an attacker. My son in law is a prison officer and this is basically what they are taught.
If it's combat then there are any number of different schools looking for you money, most of them not very well regulated and totally oversold. Take your pick.
If it's more for physical and mental well being then something like Tai Chi is good. I've been doing it for many years with greater and lesser degrees of commitment. My teachers have all said that it is the supreme combat form and that traditionally if a Tai Chi master chose to fight he would always win. They were also honest enough to say that reaching that level took many many years of devoted work, and only a few took it that far. Not many people do it for self defense reasons alone as it takes too long to become effective, but it will noticable increase your confidence in aggressive situations and teach you not to panic at close quarters, often all it takes to avoid the fight in the first place.

I have Blackbelt in Tae kwon do,so no need to learn that,although ya can go farther.As for learning anything new,nahhh,im quite capable of denfending myself if need be.

What is aikido, exactly? I've been interested in that for awhile now. You know types of techniques taught, if it's good for beginners, etcetera.

Also, is there any sort of accreditation to look for when you look for lessons?

International Akido Federation Should find what your looking for there.

Tae Kwon Do is a good way to go. And its cheap + the easiest to come by. The fancier the Art the higher the price. Muai Tai Is also easy to come by. And is also effective. I see those dojos all the time when im driving around Houston.

I was about to start a new martial arts thread, but then I saw this one pop up in the search. I'm not sure if the etiquette here is to search and bump or to avoid necroing threads, so apologies if the latter is more the done thing around here.

This thread is pretty old, going back to 2003, so I'm curious if the public consensus has changed since then. Back in 2003, the UFC was in danger of going under. Now, it's mainstream and a lot of people are more aware of styles like wrestling, Brazilian jiu jitsu and the like as a result.

My answer to the original question of this thread would be Brazilian jiu jitsu, but then I'm biased as that's the style I do. I'd also recommend judo, muay thai, wrestling, sambo (Russian art that developed out of judo with some wrestling in there too) and MMA, unless somebody is more interested in pure acrobatics (nothing wrong with that at all), for which wu shu would probably be at the top of my list. My mid-air spinning kick days are over, but I can still appreciate they look cool.
