Millionaire Artists: Like them or loave them?
I don't care how good you are, you shouldn't be able to make millions from music. People like Michael Jackson & Madonna set themselves up as god-like. Sure they have some talent, but everyone's talented in their own right.
It's like idol worship - we're all still pagans. |

Well, as long as they stay down to earth, I've got no problem with an artist making a crapload of money. When they start taking a holier-than-thou attitude towards the rest of the world, they deserved to be mugged.

I think we should give them a chance because if they have real talent, and don't "flaunt it" or set a bad role model in the way they act or dress for millions of kids, they should deserve to be respected.
"It's like saying give a man a Les Paul guitar and he becomes Eric Clapton, and of course that's not true, give a man an amplifier and a synthesizer and he doesn't become...whoever; he doesn't become us." - Roger Waters |

I don't have a problem with artists making millions, why shouldn't they be able to make millions of dollars as musicians? Why should a chosen profession determine a maximum amount of money you're allowed to make, if you're at the top of your profession why shouldn't you make boatloads of cash?

Why should it matter that Artists make money for their work? That should only disturb you if your artist preaches anarchy, disorder, and destruction while living in a Malibu Palatial Chateau.

bread is sooo cool. Soo is Mr. 007. But anyway. I go along the lines of Stephen King. (horror writer, I know, but hold on, I'll get to the point) When he released "Riding the Bullet" on-line, there was a ton of fanfare over the world about how print is dead and Stephen King is on the cutting edge and blah-de-blah-de-blah. He also made an "embarrasing" amount of money. What bothered him was that nobody cared about the story. Everybody was so concerned about how cutting-edge he was that nobody bothered to even notice that it's actually pretty fucking good. He say's in his book Everything's Eventual that he would never like to compare the number of people who downloaded the story vs the number of people who actually read it. He thinks he'd be greatly disappointed. I think that's the way music should be. Make music for the music sake. Make money by making music, don't make music to make money. |

If you are good enough, then the sky is the limit. Why shouldn't musicians be able to become millionaires off their talents? Thats like saying people with talent should show us everything they can do, but not expect to get rich off it. |

I accept people should be able to earn any amount, but to be honest I find it a bit irritating. Super-rich artists who flaunt their dosh give the whole industry a bad name. Going back to Fickle's quote: Make money by making music, don't make music to make money.

I've no problem with people earning money for making music. It's a good job to have.

Not all rap is like that, I have a friend who is big into philosophy and he also raps and MCs at different venues and he raps about God and theology and philosophy and stuff, he's really good too.

There was that girl who won Popstars, then quit the 'band' a year later giving this reason: "I've made my million (£) so I'm leaving". It was just so wrong.
Now - presumably having realised the money won't last for ever - she's trying to make a comeback as a solo 'artist'. She can hardly sing. Don't lump all modern music into the same box though. There's a lot of underplayed but innovative and different sounds out there. Radio1 does a great job of promoting this stuff. I've heard bands like Athlete, The Music, Aqualung, Doves, Royksopp a lot more on Radio1 than on any other station. |

I can never go back to Radio 1 - it pretty much committed suicide (and took half the UK music industry with it). The Radio 1 headquarters should be a 200ft tall hairy ass, with the studios being lodged firmly in the hole (where they belong).
