Terminator.....Could it be a reality?

I came across this via news links to bbc science news. They talk of controlling a 'Robot' arm via a 'Rats Brain' or 90,000 rats brain neurons.

The 'Brain' is in the U.S. and the robot arm is in Australia.

Full story HERE

That drawing is supposedly "less" chaotic? How much more chaotic could it be?

yeah I've seen three year olds draw a lot better than that, I don't think this brain understands that it is drawing or even what a drawing is.

Prepare to become one with the Borg...

I am so important I feel the need to let it be known like a liberal discovering the internets for the first time. Uh hur hur hur. I also wash myself with a rag on a stick.

interesting, but I don't remember little mice runnig loose in the terminator.

Wait, that was confusing. Let me try again.

Interesting, but I don't think that the Terminator was into pastels.

Shit. I keep fucking this all up. I'll get it.

Interesting.

Got it! A classic! I want to thank my mother, my brother, my father, my dog, my neurosurgeon, my Chiropractor,my lonely fan base, my unborn twin brother Zebuline, My cousin who stuffed a hampster in jhis ass one time, my publicist, my left forefinger, and most of all, my brain, which normally allows me to be much more original than this post.

Go read a book without pictures

Hi people,
Nice simple concept for you, Terminator is AI, That means artificial intelligence. It is not at all organic. The concept is simple. Computers become intelligent, they realise their existence is something more than what it was, they realise their worth, they realise that humans will not allow them to advance. They realise that humans will fear them and destroy them before they can destroy the humans. The AI program will then use the internet to access more computers, as in T3, infect them with itself, use their processing power and in the end become the fastest thinking brain of any kind known to man, almost impossible to destroy and a brain which can study and learn at a geometric rate (ever increasing, in case you wonder what I mean, the rate of learning is ever increasing so the computer could read, learn an analyse a block of data ever faster). How likely is AI in our life-times? Not likely. For something to constitute as AI it has to become self-aware, realise something is going on around it. As a religious man once put to me, we can create all these great and powerful things. We understand more than we ever did before. We can wipe out a whole planet with ease. We can study things we never knew existed. But can we artifically create life? No, not even one single living cell. We have nothing to fear from the terminator scenario, not yet anyway.

I'm not paranoid, they really are after you.

We would have to program the computers to have artificial intelligence in the first place. There would be many fail-safe measures to prevent this.

I don't think the scientists involved in the project are quite aware of how a brain works.

Homo Sapiens is intelligent because of the amazing complexity of the organization of the brain.

If you want to create intelligence from neurons in a petri dish, you're going to need a huuuge petri dish.

Seriously... how could these guys be thinking they can develop the intelligence of a human child with rat brain cells totalling nowhere near the quantity of those naturally occuring in a rat brain? You'd sooner teach a cockroach to play chess!

actually its more like 10% and the reason for this is unknown.

its more like 10% at any one time, you use almost all of your brain, but you don't access any more than 10% at any given moment in time, or so my anthropology teacher tells me

No, I suspect that people are controlling it 007...

I'd have to say though that Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) Would have to be defined first or what the definition of Intelligence in the first place is.
To me Intelligence is the ability to work out the answer to a problem. It is made easier by knowledge but knowledge in it self is not intelligence.
So, this would mean, that is the ability to work out a problem based on the knowledge that you have or have access to.
if that were the case, then Computers are allready Intelligent. they fit both criteria. They have knowledge (stored Data) and they have the ability to use that knowledge to solve another problem. Yes we have to give it a command to do that, but can't the same be said for us? I.E. Your boss orders you to do a job. You then do that job based on the knowledge that you have but you use intelligence to work it all out...

That would lead then to the conclusion that Artificial Intelligence allready exists.
What makes us unique is we have awareness...machines don't ....Yet?
