As far as I'm concerned, it was a pretty damn successful contest, as the skinners made a lot of very interesting and great-looking remixes

Many of the remixes were the sorts of skins that we'd normally not see. Hopefully some people will come to like the idea of making a remix and we all get to see more interesting remixes in the future. 1K1WS has now got a permanent new "Remixed" category for that purpose...

There were a lot of skins that I kinda wish rated higher. That's the what you get when so many of the entries are so good, though... :/

btw, there are two (equal) 5th placed skins. Which one did you mean?

That Strongbad skin is one of my favourites. The same look, a totally different theme... and quite eye-catching

Lord of Landmines is very good. But actually, one of my top favourites was the other #5 - the Super Mario skin.

I think the Strongbad skin is great. Even though the original has nothing to do with with strongbad, everytime I look at it now, I just can't help but think that it was crying out the whole time to be made into a Strongbad's Party skin

Second place. I always did like silver- less gaudy than gold. Im happy I got in the top 6, and happier still that the top 6 saw a representation of different styles rather than 1 particular popular style stealing all the awards.

Congrats to Dimi and the rest of the entrants. This group can create quite fine work when they put their minds to it (or when there is a suffeciently succulent carrot dangling from a string...)

I've got your skin lined up next to the screenshot, and they look identical, xeno. I even made sure that Max saved the PNGs in such a way that they were calibrated correctly (and not made darker, like often happens with PNGs).

id like to know the vote each individual judge gave for the skins.....i thought the contest would be like the olympics where each judge gives a score for each area(style,originality,etc.,ect.)

WOW... Thanks you guys... I'll be honest, I was just hoping to place, and was disappointed I couldn't get my comp to cooperate to get the second one done; there were really some kickass entries in there, everyone deserves some major kudos for this one. I loved the whole idea, and really thought some great work came out of this contest.

Gee, let me guess: you're disappointed that all 7 judges didn't have as narrow taste as you and unanimously vote Monaux's skin into 1st place, despite the fact that there were many top-quality entries representing various styles of skins, not just the style you prefer

You've just insulted the judges, some of whom are from here, and any number of skinners here. Good one. Really good.

The judges all used criteria similar to the ones used at winamp.com (aesthetics, creativity, functionality, etc.), but with strong emphasis placed on the quality of the remix (not just the skin per se) - as a good remix needs to demonstrate a talent with creatively melding one's own work with the work of another - a talent that is not normally required to make just a good stand-alone skin. Using these criteria, the judges awarded the 5 skins they thought were the best 10, 7, 5, 3, and 1 points respectively. These points were then added up to produce the final results.

All skins at 1001 get n/a until they have at least 1 vote from a member and 50 thumb-clicks from non-members (member votes have much more weight than a thumb-click).

well i wasnt really wondering how the judges got the scores(it was explained pretty well in the contest rules area), but i was wondering what score each judge gave each skin(right now i only see you and max give comments).

i just thought we would be able to see all of the scores, but its all good.

and blueballs: to be perfectly honest, i dont think that lord of landmines even deserved that no.5 spot...it looked nothing like the original skin and bored me to sleep with the same old dark metal, glowing lcd, opening and closing volume and lets not forget the somehow artistically dramatic "metal-head-in-the-space-between-the-eqbars"....sure it was well done performance and its something not easily done......but ive seen this performance too many times to care anymore.

and im not upset at what you said really, but its just that artistic part of my brain that gets offended when something gets(or wants) more credit then it really should.

Hmm... not the fairest system, in my opinion. I'd have chosen each judge to rate each skin 0-10 (with decimals). But no voting system is really fair (this has been mathematically proven).

Not just monaux's skin, I can't believe Akura GT, Avalon and the Strongbad amp didn't even get in the top 6. Yes, I did insult the judges, I may be friends with some of them, but it doesn't stop the fact that I don't agree with many of those top finishers. Dimichan deserved it but (sorry if somebody made it in the forum, I'm to lazy to go look) that Mario Amp has a good idea making World 2, but it's the same damn thing. That circuit amp doesn't deserve to be where it is either, how many circuit skins are there? It's the same as all of them. Originality in the remix should've been an issue in this, clearly it was not. Some of the top rated skins don't belong there, as others that didn't get rated deserve to be there. Don't assume I only meant monaux's skin, you know what they say about assumptions.

BB, I hardly think you can claim there is any more originality to the monaux skin and caz's skin than in the other top 6 finishers. That's not to say they're not good skins, remixes or entries but let's not kid ourselves...

Right, so you would choose Lord of Landmines, Akura GT, avalon, strongbad, and The Hollow for your top 5. Definitely a good list - but they were by no means the only good entries. So how likely do you think that all 6 other judges - considering that the judges were specifically, and rightly, chosen to represent as broad a range of tastes as possible - would vote for those particular 5 skins? And if those 5 skins did make it, one could just as easily have complained at the absence of xenosomething's, e-raser's, Xerxes', [e]ocbina's, Will's, Luigi Hann's and quite a few others'. You say that the Mario skin didn't change much (though the remix did have some very fun and very nicely made things in it). Well, people could argue that Akura GT didn't change much either. You say that there are loads of skins that look like the circuit skin, well, people could argue - like xeno did - that there are loads that look quite similar to Lord of Landmines, or conversely, that LOLM didn't actually resemble EnergyAmp enough. Nevertheless, these were all very good skins, and these things, and many others, were all things that the judges had to consider, and it was never going to be easy for any one judge to narrow the list down to 5.

If the judging was all up to me, the top 5 would have been a bit different too. If it was up to any of the 7 judges alone, the results would have been quite different - the judges' top 5's all looked quite different (and btw, most of the skins you mentioned overall scored quite highly). There were quite a few more than 5 skins that were feasible contenders for the top 5, and the results were never going to be clear cut, so to come to a result that was fairest to everyone was to get several judges that all knew their stuff, skin-wise, very well, but represented a broad range of tastes, to vote collectively. And inevitably, the results weren't going to be exactly how you would see them, or how I would see them, or how any of the individual judges would see them - nor should they have been, as the judging panel was meant to, as much as reasonably possible, represent the skinning community as a whole.

I strongly considered that system at first, but eventually decided quite strongly against it because when assigning each skin a number out of a hundred to each skin (or 10 with decimals), you don't actually know how it's going to turn out. You give each skin a rating out of 100 and at the end, each skin has some numerical score, and that's that - and quite possibly you're left thinking "hmm, I thought I really liked skin #14, but the numbers say that I liked #1, #8, #15, #19, and #22 better ". I wanted to force the skinners to really scratch their heads, compare the remixes to one another, think, re-think, eliminate, wondering which of the 23 skins they really liked and were going to put in their 'elite group of 5'. That way, the only skins that would get points would be skins that each judge really considered to be the creme de la creme of the 23. And we wouldn't have a situation where a skin won the contest because it received somewhat good scores from all of the judges, though none of them actually thought it was "special".

As you say, no system is perfect, but that's the main reason why I opted with that one.

The longer I look at dimichs skin the more I like it.

The only thing I didnt like was that some people draw back there skins, as soon as the results were out. I don't like my submisson to be the only bad rated on there, hehe.

Thanks to db and Max and everyone else who was involved in organizing this event.

What about a future remix-with-theme contest? For example take any existing skin and make it a christmas skin or something like that.

I understand you wanted it rated as a whole. I'm merely one person and I like pretty much 1 or 2 styles of skins, Just because I don't agree doesn't make it wrong, I'm not trying to start a debate, just I personaly thought the judging was bad, mainly because I'm selfish and like the metal skins.

For what the judging was intended to do, it was done right. I still don't like the outcomes at all, but I wasn't a judge and probably for this exact reaosn, lol. But whatever. Just because I personaly don't agree with the line-up of winners doesn't mean there has to be a heated debate over it. The judges are all good skinners, but in my opinion, horrible judges.
