Port forwards (not what your thinking pls read)

is there ANY possible way to not have to forward a port from my LinkSys router to my computer? My dad is *afraid* of the hackers getting in (no matter how much I tell him they wont). I was thinking that since I am able to direct connect on AIM and I am able to send and receive files on anything, why wouldnt I be able to use a port that I do all the file transfers on? Are there any ports that you know of that I could use in the DNAS Shoutcast Server?
I pray that there is a way! <-- i know its not praying but it looked like it haha

Anyways, thanks in advance for ANY answers that you guys give me!

Winamp Rules! I dont know how I would listen to ANYTHING without it!

You can use any port that you want as long as the forwarded ports and the config file/source all match. The only restriction is that you canNOT use a port that is already in use..

Most ports that you have forwarded to your computer or are direct connected are being used. Your dad most likely blocked almost every other port. Though there is away to stop hackers from getting in while having the port open. It's on my LinkSys router at least. You have to have total lockdown security on the ports, and then forward the ports you want to the DNAS machine. I have done this, it overrides the security so if the hackers get to your machine through the stream, they can't venture out to your computer.

Yuo HAVE to use some sort of port forwarding if you are going through a router that uses NAT, if however you can receive direct connections through AIM then you are already using some sort of port forwarding. If however you can only make direct connection and send files (not receive them), then this is not using port forwarding as you are initiating the connection and most router will allow outgoing connection otherwise you would not be able to do anything at all like view web pages etc. If however you can receive direct connections and receive directly sent files (i've never used aol but and irc dcc send would indicate that you can) then you are already doing some sort of port forwarding and you would be able to run shoutcast on that port, (shoutcast will run on whatever port you tell it to). however if this is the case opening up another port for shoutcast (e.g. the default port 8000) is no more of a security risk that what you are doing at the moment.

how would I find out what port my AIM is using? cuz I could close AIM to run shoutcast, that would be no problem for me I CAN send AND receive files, other people have direct connected to me therefore im guessing THEY initiated the connection

You'd have to find out the port that AIM is using, which, unfortunately I don't know how to do. When/if you find it out, you will go into the server config file and set the port to that port. Then, of course, match that port in the source.

I think I have heard of port scanners, but alot of times I run into 30 bucks for one, and I am not paying 30 bucks to find out what port AIM is using Anyone know of a FREE port scanner, or a way to do it without a program?
thanks for the quick replys guys!

Search google for "AIM Port", its like right there. Also, you will need that port plus one port above that. Say the AIM port is 1034, you would need 1035 open also. And if you used the AIM port, you would not be able to use AIM anymore until you stop using your radio.

Do you mean until he had different port settings in SHOUTcast he wouldn't be able to use AIM, or that he can use AIM unless he's connected to SHOUTcast?

i don't know to be honest i have never used aim. Is suspect that you will not be able to get this to work cos if you could receive direct connections then you would already know the port cos you or your dad would have had to enable forwarding on that port for it to work in the first place. I suspect aim gets round this as follows.

When you connect to the aim server you are initiating the connection so this work ok. The aim server then maintains this connection. When someone wants to send you a file the aim server send a message to your computer using the connection that you initiated. Your computer then initates a connection to the person that wants to send you the file and so long as ther are not behoind a firewall/router as well then a connection is made. This way all connections are outgoing from from your computer so the router lets them out. It will also let back in any data that is sent from other computers in response to your connection, such as the file the other person wants to send you.

Shoucast does not work like the, there is no central server that shoutcast connects to, the person wanting to listen to your srtation has to initiate the connection. If you are behind a router then you HAVE to enable port forwarding on the port that you are running the shoutcast server on to forward to your PCs ip address.

Well, in a way, he is smart by doing this. You could of accidently done something wrong and opened up every port and added a sign that says "Attack here!". Though, who would really be hacking into your network? It's just a simple station, which is not going to be getting 100 people listening a day, maybe 10 a day at first.

Does your dad do anything with the computer? Maybe host a website or something that he doesn't anyone to connect to the network or anything?

It appears (from what I found) that AIM uses port 5190. You'd have to make sure that port is open and 5191.

Not with the AIM port, but with other ports. I tried it with the mIRC port once, but I had to have both that port and one above opened and forwarded. It would be the same with the AIM port. And when I did use the mIRC port, I couldn't use mIRC while I was broadcasting because something was already using that port.

I just checked it out, yes it does use 5190 as a port base. Though if you have 5191-5193 open as well, it will use them for sending and recieving files etc. So if you have 5190 blocked, it will hop to either 5191, 5192, or 5193 to connect.

Trying to find out what services you are running...

Web Server Found = Server: ZyXEL-RomPager/3.02
Telnet Open = Password:
FTP Server Open = 220 Sprint FTP version 1.0 ready at Sat Jan 1 15:39:39 2000

What does all this mean? does anyone know, I know not of anything that I am running that would be these things. and I already put 5190 as my port, and it kept giving me errors like this:
<08/30/03@23:04:06> [yp_add] error connecting to yp.shoutcast.com
<08/30/03@23:04:29> [yp_add] error connecting to yp.shoutcast.com
and it didnt even error and Im using AIM

You have to make sure that 5190+1 is open through your router..

Did you change the port in your config file AND your source?

If the source and server are running on the same machine, make sure to put "127.0.0.1" in the address box in the source.

If you have run some port scanning software on your PC then that means that there is a web server a telnet server and an ftp server running on your PC. If you have gone to a website that scans your ports then that means your dads router is already doing port forwarding on ports 80, 21 and 23 (web ftp and telnet) to one or more computers or more likely your ISP uses a transparaent proxy and the IP address that various sites give you is not your IP but the IP of a box at your ISP and there is in fact very little chance of you getting shoutcast to work.

If what you say is true and im trying to use port 5190, then shouldnt I tell the server to use port 5189 and the source the same, that way the "outside world" uses 5190?
