Voted for none. In all honesty though, if someone else made me listen to either I'd have to pick Eminem. 50 Cent remains on my shit list for that stupid ass song of his "In Da Club".

I can't deside who's the better rapper, so let's do it like the Romans; Pit them in a Gladiator fight against each other with no armor for defense, but a steak knife as a weapon. As a distraction to the fight between each other, we can release 2 tigers into the ring, which will visciously rip their limbs apart and kill them both instantly, if they can't use a steak knife to kill them first...
Bets are now open...
A very close Japanese friend I knew a while ago once said to me "Watashi no koto wo oboeta, onegai shimasu...Yakusoku?" I forgot his name though... |

Shouldn't "NONE of them" be "NEITHER of them?"
I'm not much of a rap fan anymore, but Eminem seems to be the better lyricist. 50 Cent sounds like he's mumbling. |

Why IS it Rap "musicians" are so obsessed with writing rhyming poetry about Killing- they love describing how wonderful their gun is, how good they are at shooting it, how many "NIGGAZ" they can shoot etc etc. Then some "homie" actually "caps" another rap "musician" and the whole rap community acts extremely surprised. And on the local news, it is required that some rap "musician" is shown saying that "MC _______ was my 'homie", This is the Day the Music Died" - COMPLETELY ignorant that there already was a day the music died, when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash. FYI Rap "musicians", The music did not die when Tupac was shot, when the Notorious B.I.G. was shot, or when Alliyahh cratered. Number 1, that event already happened. Number 2, the music cannot die when no real musicians are "capped".

You can dis these two if you want . . . . .
OK, most of you are being WAYYY to hard on hip-hop. Remember that there are a LOT of hip-hop artists you have never heard before. Personally I'm neither here nor there as far as Eminem and 50 Cent go, but they are inferior mainstream hip-hop. Some of you hip-hop bashers out there should try listening to some of my choices:
Buck 65 MC Paul Barman Cunninlynguists Anti-pop Consortium Public Enemy RJD2 or even old Eminem (I mean pre-"My Name Is" stuff) his "Off The Wall" album is really quite good. |

. MC Paul Barman is jewish, so you can be SURE all his lyrics are about drugs and hoes . . . . . All I'm trying to say is that there is a lot of music outside of the MTV world and you cannot (or at least should not) make such sweeping judgements about a type of music soley based on what the mainstream version of it sounds like. Oh and BTW I wasn't necessarily talking about a growing out of not liking hip-hop I was talking about growing out of the phase where you ONLY like metal, punk and rock, which are all excellent styles of music, don't get me wrong! There is just a LOT more stuff out there worth listening to.[/RANT] |

Neither. Not a big fan of rap. I prefer older musicians (the Doors, the Byrds, Simon and Garfunkle, U2, Bob Dylan) with lyrics that actually meant something.

Mainstream rap or underground hip-hop, I just don't care much for it in general. Sure, I like people like Jurassic 5, the Nextmen, and Dub Pistols, but that's only 3 out of 7, which total in only a mere 10 songs that I've found myself to grow on. Those 10 songs barely even break a full 1% in total of all my playlist songs...
But that's just it; I don't care. I don't like the music, therefore I don't really listen to it from barely to at all. Just because there's a small group of underground artists that sway in a different way than their mainstreamer counterparts doesn't mean that I might like them more. I'm not even gonna give them a chance, because I don't...Forget it...My point is made. I like my music, other's have theirs. But everyone also has an opinion, whether it's a shiney respective one or not... Besides, you havn't had the time to understand Xerxes taste in music, or his general personality first of all, so don't bother on the hip-hop part...
A very close Japanese friend I knew a while ago once said to me "Watashi no koto wo oboeta, onegai shimasu...Yakusoku?" I forgot his name though... |

There are some bad and some good artists in all of these genres. In hip-hop the bad ones are just more popular than the good ones, IMO.

I highly disagree- the mainstream representitives of a genre are theoretically the most fit portions of that genre, since they are what the largest amount of people choose to consume.
Andy Warhol once argued that Good Art is what Sells- I argue that a synonym for "Underground" is "Commercially Unsuccessful as of Today" I feel entirely justified and correct when judging underground acts by listening to commercially successful a.k.a mainstream representitives.(You immediatly can identify a hipster when mainstream is a derogative term) I judge crooning music by the Gold Standards of Sinatra and Martin. I judge jazz by the commercially successful Davis, Armstrong, and Fitzgerald. These are the people that sold, they are the most successful. But it is the post 60's. Now music people automatically discount what sells. Because they are so into their intellectual anti-establishment conciet "Punk/Thug" that they condition themselves not to enjoy it. The difference between Punks and Thugs (Rapper Punks) however, is when Thugs make money, they flaunt it and buy sparkly earings, and sing about their high status and how many expensive things they can buy and eat. Conversely, the Punk that makes money sees all his punk fans leave him because he has caved in the man. The Punk cannot wear sparkly earings nor sing about his possessions because it further alienates his anti-establishment fanbase- who's essence of being - the Punk Conciet, requires them to not "feel" like they are contributing the Machine. (Even if they are)

All I'm trying to say is that, I think everyone should try to have an open mind about all musical styles. Not everything from any genre is bad. It wasn't very long ago when I hated hip-hop in all of its encarnations. Just give the less popular stuff a chance and I'll be more than happy. Oh and BTW if you don't like a particular style of music it is your opinion, nothing more. |
