Possble Next Filesharng Prog

Surely someone should write a filesharing prog that encypts everything a stupid number of times and makes it really hard and slow to track people ? and more importantly doesnt look like it is so trackers get false information ?

just an idea thats probably been done..

Also have all data routed thu the program on other uses PC's say thu 100 or so users all of which dont have the song, if the data was routed via the program, and the source information lost then it would be alot harder to track ? yes it would be slower but i think slower is better than a fine

You mean like WASTE developed by Justin Frankel from Nullsoft who later quit Nullsoft over the affair?

Read more here: http://www.philybaby.co.uk/news/justinquitsnullsoft.htm

In March 2000, Nullsoft briefly posted a decentralized file-sharing program called Gnutella before it was axed by AOL. But the genie had been set free, and other developers refined the code to create post-Napster file-sharing programs.

Nullsoft's latest creation was a file-sharing program that allowed users to set up secure networks of no more than 50 people.

Within hours of its posting, Waste was deleted. In its place was a notice that said the program had been posted without Nullsoft's permission.

``If you downloaded or otherwise obtained a copy of the software, you acquired no lawful rights to the software and must destroy any and all copies of the software, including by deleting it from your computer,'' the statement said. ``Any license that you may believe you acquired with the software is void, revoked and terminated.''

Frankel, who is called ``Our Benevolent Dictator'' on the Nullsoft site, founded the company in 1998 after dropping out of the University of Utah.

And to keep the record straight , Justin didn't quit Nullsoft and is still actively developing new versions of Winamp and other tasty goodies.

i'd love a program like that. if anyone writes it ill be first in line to download it. not that ill be able to download that much with my 56k modem and all

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

...like AVS. There was an article toady in the New York times about various filesharing programs that encrypted and whatnot. To access them, you had to know their code-name though.

Thanks Mr Jones, that really helped me out... Justin quitin would be a catastrophy much like urmmm I dunno

Nullsoft = winamp
winamp = Justin
thus
Justin = Nullsoft

you remove Justin Nullsoft just plain doesn't exist!

Shurrup. someone in ******* asked me to host it because they too couldn't be arsed to register at the NYT site. so I opend the page saved it and upped it :P.

I never knew that Jonsey, I thought he'd gone. Oh well good news I suppose. Woulda been better if he'd quit and then developed a new version of WASTE with no AOL baggage .

My thoughts:

The best file sharing program will have:

1. Superb indexing - ability to retrieve results quickly and globally.
2. Decetralization - obvious, and prevents the network from falling.
3. Hashing - unique fingerprinting of every file to prevent fake files.
4. Anti-leech method - SOME type of unhackable method of preventing leechers.
5. Multiple File Types support
6. No form of adware/spyware/anything

Content is also important, but you need a good prog before anyone will come. It's the network that is important. There are other minor things like bandwidth throttling, skins, etc., but the above are very imporant.

They say if you play a Microsoft CD backwards you hear satanic messages. That's nothing, if you play it forwards it installs Windows.

What is a leecher? Is it someone who downloads and gives nothing in return? Or is it someone that does share but downloads 10 tracks at a time?

None at all, I don't like hardcore.

Anonymity would be a plus but it's almost impossible. Even the trendy file sharing programs like ES5 and filetopia are not anonymous, just trickier.

Downloads but doesn't upload.

Kazaa fails many of these points. It's indexing isn't global and for 3 million users it doesn't have very good content. It doesn't have hashing and has spyware. It's anti-leech system is easy to hack as well.

Then let's burn the leachers!!!

The ultimate music-sharing package did exist (Audiogalaxy). The sadness.

I'd be interested in using Waste (for those legal songs and roms).

However, you'd have to be able to trust the other networkers.

I could have an exlcusive p2p network of just 1 person then. Though there won't be a great deal of file sharing.
