what is taken into consideration about those who voluntarily paid for winamp v1 or v2

I voluntarily paid $20 for winamp v1.92 back in the day. will I have to pay again for winamp pro?

P.S. I also bought Justin's book.

Hey, man, sucks for you. Really, I kind of feel bad for y'all, but you don't understand that some things have happened since Winamp was last unfreeware. Also, you don't have to get Winamp Pro. You don't have to get it. YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET IT.

But Fickle, I want CD Ripping at full capacity!
Right, but you don't need it. You can just have Winamp.
But Fickle, You don't listen. I want it, but I don't want to give anything for it.
To generate revenue so that people stop getting shitcanned, Winamp now has advanced features that you don't have to have, that you will have to pay for.

Look, to me it's like buying a toaster. You can either get the toaster, or get the toaster with a scope mounted on it so you can watch your toast from a distance. Now, to me, that'd be cool as hell. But the thing is,
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET IT.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET IT.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET IT.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET IT.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET IT.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET IT.

Winamp is not free for Nullsoft/Time Warner. Every download requires fees paid to developers. The fees for the advanced ripping/burning would be too much for Nullsoft to absorb. Thus, they charge what they would have to pay the developers.

not sure if this has been said before, but... how about another pro version, with just full-speed ripping/burning, for those of us who use vorbis, AAC, or whatnot? I'd be perfectly willing to pay a few bucks for that.

They aren't charging for Winamp 5 Pro 'cause they want to make money, as was said, it's to cover the license fee. Nullsoft is owned by AOL and it's not like AOL wants to make money either giving out so many coasters.

No, I didn't pay for it. Because it was free when I got it.

I will pay for Winamp Pro when it comes off.

And yes, I have a penis. Thanks for noticing.

this? (this too ebook version)

Google's a wonderful thing.

BTW

Not to rub it in or anything, 01000101, but this line sums the situation up nicely:

17 used & new from $2.98

From the Winamp Pro FAQ
I paid for the shareware version of Winamp a while back before it went free, why do I have to pay again?
Because this is Winamp Pro. If you paid for the Winamp shareware you can still use Winamp, there is no pressure to upgrade.

As they say, if you want something done, it's better to do it yourself so allow me to quote myself from this thread

I love this place.

"Oh, no, it's not Winamp version 3.0 it's Winamp3 version 1.0, that's why it's so crap..."

"You paid for Winamp... but this is Winamp Pro"

It's as if people are trying to find some elabourate and ridiculous excuse.

Pure and simple: That was 1996. This is now. Times change, get used to it. Yes, Nullsoft have to pay a $2 license fee for every copy of the MP3 encoder sold. Yes, they'll still make a profit. Yes, I haven't a clue where that profit'll go .

sell ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sl)
v. sold, (sld) sell·ing, sells

1. To exchange or deliver for money or its equivalent.

So why do they have to pay for something that they could give away for free?

what if winamp WAS as good? I'd rather use it in that case. Is CDex or other ripping/burning software that better? Who knows.
Is Winamp Pro going to be an integrated music solutiont that could rival wmp on all fronts? Hell yeah.

Integrated solutions is a bad idea in most cases (I haven't seen a fantastic integrated sollution yet), especially for users who want to have advanced options.

I say it's plenty fair.

Put simply, all the new features in Winamp 5 pro were never in Winamp 1.xx, so why should anyone get a free ride? All I can see is perhaps a small discount for their early support.

And besides, there will still be a free version that has all the features from all the earlier Winamps anyway, plus more.

These features (Cd ripping, video support) were added mostly because people wanted them within Winamp for more convenience but hell, I wouldn't rip a CD with winamp, considering that EAC or CDEX offer really secure ripping modes and are dedicated programs that will do the job way better.

Somewhere (somewhere) I have my "confirmation e-mail" for registering WinAmp version -6 (hey, it was a LOOOONG time ago) for a mighty ten yankee greenbacks.

As you said, useful AND used often.

The search for the ultimate signature continues apace. I have journeyed from the peaks of Nepal to the depths of oceanic trenches. I have crossed deserts, jungles, swamps, savannas, steppes and frozen wastelands. I have consulted with seers, swamis, sages, scholars and savants. The peregrination proceeds purposefully.
