and the like Too many great european rock bands to list here.

those type of bands use to RULE europe.

WHAT THE FU*K IS GOING ON!!!

Best Group? In all of europe? I don't think so.
"Coldplay won best group, but were not there to accept the award. Lead singer Chris Martin was with girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow."

Christina Aguilera - Just shut up and cover up your phat ass.

"Aguilera, wearing a nun's habit and surrounded by a choir, opened the awards. She removed the habit to reveal a skimpy top and leather chaps, breaking into the chorus of her song "Dirrty."

"This is my show and if anyone's going to be getting the award for showing the most skin, it's me," Aguilera told the audience."

I can't offer any words of comfort, believe it or not, the music-buying generation love this crap. People are into personalities now, the music takes a back seat.

It pained me as well. To add insult to injury, almost all of these so-called artists were american. It was like Harlem coming to Edinburgh.

I just ignore the mainstream and associated award shows. It's all crap.

Rock n Roll is dead.

To add, men have no balls. It's all DIY and cookery now....

There are no more rebels.

...There are no more rebels.
But isn't the rebel aspect part of the personality thing that puts music in the back seat?

My idea of a rebel is someone who takes a guitar, strums a decent tune and sings the blues. Someone like:

What is ROCK if it's not White Stripes? The music of The White Stripes sounds like simplified version classic Blues-ROCK (<=hell, did you see that: the word ROCK.)mixed with the pure 60's pop-style.

If the words Blues-ROCK doesn't ring a bell for you, I'm forced to mention great names like Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Cream, Ten Years After, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and erarly Black Sabbath. These artists again had their roots in original rhytm'n'blues/rock'n'roll and chicago-blues. Remember that even HEAVY METAL was blues-rock in the very beginning...

Ok, TWS' music may be a little overrated but it's fun someone dares to play real Blues. There have allways been a great demand for bluesrock but not enough (good) artists. Therefore the few ones actually playing it get overrated.

I like Queens of The Stone Age as well and it's FUCKING STRANGE they weren't nominated, but remember that all post-nirvana-stuff that you actually think about as the only real rock of today is just an echo from the era when Zepplin's album Presence was released... all that is left is the distorted fuzzy guitar, no BLUES at all.

Maybe we shouldn't care about MTV, it's just corrupted crap. QOTSA maybe just made mean comments about the MTV or the producers wanted to vary a bit, last year the Awards were quite Foo-Fighters fixated...

But listen here:
MORE BLUES, please!!!
Rockers, forget some of your Nirvana and Iron Maiden and play Ten Years After, Cream and Led Zep instead!!!!

I don't think WS are in the same league as the above. To me, their music sounds too minimalistic, too lazy, lacking a bit of punch. If you like, plain boring. Pavement do lo-fi far better.

I'm waiting for real rock to re-emerge. Bands such as BRMC and Interpol give me hope.

I know what you guys mean, I'm sitting here listening to Nuggets (eight compilation of the best of the psychedelic years) and wondering where it all went wrong? There have always been manufactored bands and artists and I guess there always will be, but I don't think they have dominated in the way they do today.

The respite from the torrent of garbage that is played on radio, let alone tv, is the John Peel show on Radio 1. He plays alot of, what I would call crap, but it's always new and always none-mainstream.

Hopefully this will end soon. We are waiting for a new puck style movement to emerge and shake the record industry up, but, I fear it has gone the way of the film industry where the accountants have taken over. They see money in recycling the last hit that happened.

Bollocks!..../me turning up the old cd player

It's been said that I could start an arguement in an empty room.....I see no reason to disbelieve this.

Do you mean:

A) Missy Elliott the personality
B) Missy Elliott the music
C) Both

I agree with your assumption about accountants taking over. We've seen the record industry's true colours over the last decade. The beast is fat, ugly and greedy.

they wheel him into the studio each day?

quit the jokes he's been on for ages - in the days radio one was still on the am band I used to listen to his show- the only thing I hated about radio one is the "needle time" - must be the reason why offshore radio became so big in the 70's and 80's

too bad they are only on fm these days. radio one was one of the great stations to listen to.
together with the late radio luxemburg and the late radio caroline
( every great station seems to be gone nowdays)

Each Thursday a new show on Celtica Radio with Darkwave music.

They are rebelling from people who grab a fiddle, play indecent tunes, and belt country?

I still don't get the rebel aspect of music. It seems to be mandatory for appreciation, but it is too fleeting of a thing to hold on for long.

To some extent rebellious music has to have something to rebel against...

Missy Elliot's music, I've never met her and so can't comment on her as a person.

Peel may be old, but he stills plays new music, still searches for the unusual and still clearly loves music of all kinds. If I reach Peel's age and I'm still in music as much as I am now, then I'll be a very happy man.

Of course! My favourite bands have rebelled against the whole spectrum of society - from politics to plain angst. The Jesus & Mary Chain and Stone Roses rebelled against the music industry itself.

I admire anyone who defies convention - 'we'll play the guitar this way...............'.

Me as well marvin. He also has a happy family life and supports Liverpool FC to-boot.

What more could you want? (I could think of 1 or 2 things)...

What I want to understand is what rebellion has to do with music. If these people played their instruments just as well but sang songs about whirligigs and moonpies, would depriving the concept of rebellion make the music unlistenable/unmarketable?

People are lamenting how music has fallen since the so called "Golden age" of the 60's-80's rock/punk. My working hypothesis is that the "rebellion fetish" that music depended on in these decades has imploded. There is simply nothing to rebel against anymore, and anything that still exists has already been given a treatment by a better artist in the past.

right, in 96-224 kbps VBR (average 160) and joint stereo with LAME!
Why use Kazaa bullshit quality when you've got a good libary-system in your town.

Just a few days of waiting and 50 €-cent in ordering-fees. That's the libary, man! Serving the people their task!

The mainstream will always BE mainstream- pandering, unintelligent, trite. The existence of the mainstream is what makes rebel music rebellious in the first place. If it didn't exist, then rebel music couldn't exist. Why attack it for the sake of nothing else to sing about? There's plenty of other things to talk about, like Whirligigs and Moonpies.

As long as it carries a good tune.

Whenever I think about the 1980-2000 generation I come out in a cold sweat. Alot of them must have watched and enjoyed the awards. *takes pistol from top drawer, closes blinds, looks at photo of family*
