All organised into separate album playlists with a separate 'misc' folder all renamed the same way and organised by name, 'the's removed.

itunes raped my mp3s, I had them all nice and sorted in folders by genre and occasionally by artist, and then I took my USB drive to school and loaded the mp3s into itunes (since all they have are macs) and it "reorganized" all of my files first into artist name folders and then into album folders. the majority of the full albums I did have were VA albums so now those files are all split up all over the board, plus it also renamed the mp3 files to be just the song name.
long story short, I lose this contest. |

Drink is drink (nothing special).
I have 3 kids - Josh (9), Carter (8), Wesley (6). They usually have a small glass of what I'm having. Beer, cider, whisky, brandy, gin, sherry, port... they can identify which is which quite easilly.Wesley now knows not to down a glass of sherry. ![]() Anyway, drink up. The euphoria has set in (I'm the winner)!!!!

Uh oh. I'm too late. Well, anyway, I just got finished backing up my playlists, so here's my "list of playlists". Each playlist is originally an M3U file I use on my PC and in my car, that is exported to HTML from Winamp for archival. All tracks are encoded losslessly (FLAC v1.1.0).
First, I have one playlist with all the complete albums I have encoded. This comprises about 2/3 of my total music volume (I think), the rest being "pieces" of albums I encoded. It's sorted by artist. Album List. Second, I have "subject" playlists. These I play, usually in shuffle mode, as if they were my own radio stations. Sort order is intentionally randomized. Modern Rock (newer than ~1990), The Wave (~1980 to ~1990), Classic Rock (older than ~1980), Love Songs (for getting laid ), eMotions (party music, basically).Next, I have a playlist for each artist collection I have. Some of these are not complete collections, but my rule is that if I have at least five albums by an artist encoded, then that artist gets a "Collection" playlist. They are sorted by album release date (to the day). Compilations and mixes are broken out by artist, but still sorted by album and exact release date. The B-52s, Fatboy Slim, Hole, Led Zeppelin, Liz Phair, Pink Floyd, The Police, Queen, Rush. And finally, I have some "type" playlists, sorted by artist, then album release date (to the day). "Soundtracks" are sorted by the name of the movie or show they're based on. Ambience, Classical, Soundtracks. *whew* ...not as much work as it seems, once you get them created. It's just a matter of maintenance and backup after that, a few minutes per week. I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash. Last edited by ScorLibran; 12th December 2003 at 17:22. |

Ah, a Rush fan.
I think Winamp falls down on playlists. Autoplaylists are so more effecient - you just tag a song and it'll automatically be added to whatever. m3u's are verging on obsolesence - I haven't used any for over a year.

They're not innately evil, but they simply work against my requirements, that's all. I want control of what goes where, and I want discreet control of every playlist update. Some aspects of my media environment I'll allow to be automated, and some I won't. I guess when I find playlist management software that can read my mind, then I'll do auto-playlists. Until then, my playlist management software is Notepad...literally. (How's THAT for being a control freak? )M3U is the only format that all of my home players and the digital media system in my car can read, so for me ubiquity is holding off obsolescence. I can't think of anything I need the actual file format to do differently than just record paths and filenames. I don't want it touching or recording tag info...I want my player modules doing that. And proprietary formatting of the playlist file can't happen (which is my problem with WA doing playlists). I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash. |

You're a true perfectionist ScorLibran (probably a few rungs higher up the ladder than me). Which is why I took care to get your name case-pefect.
I'm trying hard to tame 20,000 MP3's - they have to be named, categorised and allocated to the various playlists. If I don't get it right early in the game I'd may as well give up. But I'm 'comfortable' so far - there are small changes to come. I use statistics increasingly - the playcounter will tell me which are my most popular tracks..... If I play my most popular 1,000 tracks on random I know I'll never have to press 'next'. It's a bother getting up with a glass of wine in your hand (or if you're mid way through Crazy Taxi).
