What was your very first ripped MP3?

Easy......

Curve - Blindfold

Ripped in August 1997 using (I forget now).... Anyway, it was a .wav file and consumed 28MB of my precious 1.1GB HD>

I'm glad they've come out in the wash. What a complete bunch of losers.

They still have their songs i suppose. Pay the man is still a good song. And pretty fly (for a white guy) remains in the bowels of my hard drive.

Kid Rock - American Bad Ass

Made my first mix track back in June 17, 2001 (Coincidentally my birthday, I just realized... ), but the one I downloaded wouldn't play properly when burned on the CD...It would play 3 seconds into the song, and cut off to the next track...4 days later, I borrowed my dad's "History Of Rock" CD, ripped it, and got it right in my 2nd mix CD 4 days later...

Hole - Celebrity Skin

Ripped to mp3 @ 128 kbps. I think I did it with Real Jukebox before they turned it into a piece of crap. That was before I knew much about computers though.

My first rip/encode was my favorite album of all time, Pink Floyd ~ Animals, sometime in early 1995, into MP3 128kbps CBR (even though the published Layer-3 spec provided for up to 192kbps at the time). Technically my first encoded song would have been the first track, Pigs On The Wing (Part One).

After that, it was more music in higher bitrates when they became available in MP3. Then I had some nightmarish experiences with WMA7, then 8. Then it was Sony ATRAC, and ATRAC3. Then WMA9 (more nightmares).

And since then I've actually gotten interested in digital audio compression, so by now I've used well over 100 different encoder versions across more than a dozen formats. FLAC is my format-of-choice now. From Animals in 128kbps to 16 Pink Floyd albums in lossless archival. Progress, baby!

I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash.

I have no plans to 'upgrade' my 128k MP3's. As long as they ripped without flaws.....

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply there was anything "wrong" with 128kbps MP3. There's definitely not...I changed around mostly to experiment.

The reason I say moving to FLAC was "progress" was referring to archival. If I only listened to my music (like a sane human being), I'd use either MP3 or Vorbis as both have served me very well. But I do a sh*tload of transcoding, and transcoding from lossless is mandatory for preserving sound quality. Plus, if I use lossless, I can re-WaveGain, deGlitch, or fix waveforms without having to re-rip a CD...it's a huge timesaver.

In a nutshell: My sickness mandates lossless encoding.

I see what you're saying. Thank god I don't have to transcode. Life's complicated enough as it is.

Therein lies the problem for me. I can't seem to ever reach perfection... ( *gasp* No! How can that be?) ...so I'm ever fighting a losing battle. But hey, it gives me something to do when there's nothing good on TV.

You have plenty of time then - there's seldom anything good on TV. I spend far more time either on the PC or on the x-box. Both involve music...... and beer.

Well, The Offspring's Pay The Man, the last track on Americana. I has about 3 min's of silence in the end and a damn stupid hidden track after nine min's so it was a little bit of wasted time, took over 20 mins on a P1 166
