Gradius
Any fans 'round here? I just picked up Gradius Galaxies for my GBA the other day (yeah, I know it's been out for a long time now, but I was only just now able to pick up a copy). I love this game even though it's hard as hell.
My first taste of the series was Gradius III for the SNES, which I also absolutely love. Galaxies is very similar to III as far as gameplay goes... but the levels are completely different. The graphics are really great, too. ![]() I've got the original Gradius, Gradius III, and now Gradius Galaxies. I've still got to get Gradius II, Gradius Gaiden, and Gradius IV. I should probably look for Scramble and Salamander, too. ![]() Anybody else play any of the Gradius series? |

The original Gradius was released in 1985. Gradius II was released in 1988. Gradius III was realeased in 1989. Gradius Gaiden was released in 1997. Gradius IV was released in 1999. And Gradius Galaxies (the one I just got) was released in 2001. It's a great side-scrolling space shooter... a lot like Super R-Type, but better.

Man, I loved R-type DX for the GBC. So I will have to look into this game. How is the gameplay? Still the classic 1 hit and your ship is killed wile it may take multiple hits to kill the enemy? I rather get annoyed at that kind of gameplay, but it is fun at times. I will have to find it used somewhere and give it a try.

Yeah, it's the "one hit to kill you, gazillion hits to kill the bad guy" type thing... but if you can stay alive long enough, you can get a force field that will let you take a few hits. It's a very difficult game, though. It's way more difficult than Super R-Type (I haven't played R-Type DX yet). The levels in Gradius Galaxies are really cool, though. Very intricate, lots of interaction, and they look spiffy too.

Good gawd this game is hard as hell. I've been playing on and off since I got it, and I've finally made it to the last stage. Right now, I'm at section 9 of stage 8 and I can't get past it.
Whoever thought this shit up is a sick, sadistic sonofabitch... |

lol. I played Vikings on SNES, then again on PC (emulated SNES). This seems the type of game that would be great for GBA - Puzzles you can pretty much pick up and drop whenever you want, not necessarily a game you have to play through in one 'session'.
And yeah i dont think i ever completed the game. Hopefully i'll run across it next time in Best buy or something, too forgetful to get it now (even though i got the spare cash for it). Goodbye |

@ Jones And since you never said anything about how well you like Gradius Advance yet, I'm assuming it's stomping your ass.

as for the side scrolling shooters, one of my fav's was UN Squadron for the SNES. Another fun (and current) space shooter is Ikaruga but you need to own either a Dreamcast or a Gamecube to play it
.Ikaruga: http://gamepro.com/gamepro/domestic/...es/32952.shtml they did port The Lost Vikings to the GBA, just FYI. http://www.gamespy.com/reviews/april03/lostvikingsgba/ |

Hmm... I've read some mixed reviews about Ikaruga, but it looks really good. I might see if I can find a copy sometime soon.

I found a copy of Gradius III not that long ago at GameTrader... I've already got a copy of it, but this one is in perfect condition and was in the box with the little plastic game sleeve, all the booklets, and hell it even had the cardboard spacer that fits the game in the box. You know I had to get that one.

I FINALLY found a copy of Ikaruga (!)... I wasn't able to find it anywhere around here. I checked GameStop; Nothing. GameTraders; No dice. GameXchange; zilch. GameWare; Nope. Circuit City; zero. Wal-Mart; yeah, right... I ended up finding the last copy in EB at the Mall Of Louisiana while I was over there spending Mother's Day with my mom. And to my surprise, it was only 25 bucks brand new.
I'll be giving it a spin tomorrow afternoon when I get off from work.
