weird windows activity

hello all,

i am having this weird problem. my computer suddenly stopped recognizing my cd drive and my cd burner, i have an exclamation mark beside them in the device manager and i can't access them any more form windows.

but if i boot up from the windows XP cd and try to repair windows i go to a sorta dos mode and i can access the deives from there...

how is it possible for me to solve this problem i tried reinstalling the drivers and shit but still it is not working....

any clue on how to fix this problem

thanx

System restore to the last known date when it was running properly. If you go back in time and they still have the ! I'd check to make sure something is not fried within the hardware itself.

thanx for the answer, but system restore is disabled on my pc and i dont think the hardware is fried as i did access it form the dos pompt i got when i tried to access the windows repair option when i booted from CD. i am guessing some essential drivers are missing but i dont know how to access them or get them.

Take the drives out > Reboot > Shut off > Reinstall Drives > Turn back on.

It's worth a try

Reboot/Hold F8 key during start up/ an options screen will appear with numerous options/select "Start from last known good configuration" ..some times you then get an option to choose witch system just hit enter.

If as dork says you stil then have a prob. Suspect hardware failure or you have a virus...

I had this problem myself once and found a link through the Microsoft windows support forums

http://aumha.org/regfiles.htm

look for 'Restore Missing CD Drive' URL http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip for a zip file containing the regfile itself.

Double-click on the cdgone icon, when it asks you if you want to merge it with your registry, click Yes.

Restart, the computer, hopefully your CD Drive will be back and working (it worked for me )

If you're willing to put up with reinstalling all your drivers and stuff, then skip the first "repair" option, continue with install, and you'll be prompted again if you want to repair, right after the "searching drives for previous installs". This will basically reinstall all the critical O/S stuff, and should leave all of your programs in working order.

I just got a similar-ish problem: my cdrw/dvdrom drive is still showing up, and working fine for CD's, burning included. But it will not even recognise any DVD of any kind. Ive tried rented dvd's as well as dvd's that have worked on this drive before. XP reports back to me that there is no disk in the drive.

My opinion is that the thing is just physically fucked. Anyone got any other suggestions?

Sounds likely. Look at the bright side. You can get a 52x32x52 burner/dvd reader for about $75, or a good DVD-ROM drive for about $30.

You may want to try updating your firmware, however. That may fix it.
