New anti-smoking ads to be launhed in the UK
The UK goverment is funding a series of hard-hitting and imaginative new anti-smoking ads. For years we've heard about how smoking causes cancer, but, research shows, smokers have got used to this and have switched off. The new ads are pretty graphic, but try and tread a fine line bewteen memorable and distrubing. They focus on the other health issue relating to smoker.....heart problems.
Story : BBC It's been said that I could start an arguement in an empty room.....I see no reason to disbelieve this. |

Not a bad ad champin so far. I hate smoking, I see NO value in it what so ever, but damn, it seems like a lot of people I know are starting to. It makes me sad.

Currently, 28% of men and 26% of women in the UK smoke regularly. That seems kind of low to me. I am curious to what the percentage is in the usa. I smoke and have smoked since a young teenager. I wish I could stop but dont have the willpower. I am addicted. Back when I was a kid no one ever said it was bad for your health. We did not have the education that the kids now a days do. I am glad that there is a big push on anti-smoking. My boys are much more educated than I was and I hope they dont ever smoke. ~ Missy |

26% seems low? thats like 1 out of every 4 people! 75 Million out of 300 million. I dunno...it actually is entirely perceptional...dont know if thats a real word but you know what i meant :P
Smoking a cigarette now...quitting when i get back to school (next week). I really wish smoking wasn't bad...it really is great fun. I'm not quitting due to health reasons though..its the part of me it occupates (as it does for everyone who smokes) that makes me want to quit. Too much info...i know i know

Another example: "Someone dies from smoking every 72 seconds." What does that mean? Is this lung cancer patients that smoked? heart disease patients that smoked? CANCER patients that smoked? Does it even go so far as to determine that amount of money spent on cigarettes, and extrapolated the dollars saved as an addition to their income which could have prolonged their life? No one plops over dead from smoking a cigarette, it simply aggravates diseases that otherwise MAY not have developed. edit: Just realized this is a site aimed to market their product: statistical vaguery is clearly in their advantage. Keep in mind I abhor cigarettes, I never want to have to smell them and I applaud any law that prevents the independent actions of other people from harming me. They say if you play a Microsoft CD backwards you hear satanic messages. That's nothing, if you play it forwards it installs Windows. |

I think the ads are funny. I see smokers and i now think about how cool it would be to stamp on their major blood veins.
