What the Hell Kind of Genre is This?

I just tried to rerip my Veruca Salt CD's and Resolver's genre came up as... and I quote, Riot Grrrl/Queercore.

Three words here. What the Fuck?

I'm glad you're troubled by genre mismatches as well. I've had some truly ridiculous ones (unfortunately I can't remember them now)....

Give it a day.

When adding tracks to my library I change the genre to 'unknown' straight away. I like to make my own mind up about these things. Take a band like Stereolab who span 20 genres - I changed the lot to 'Ambient Pop.

It isn't just mismatch. Most programs I have rip straight to Rock/Pop. But fucking queercore?

By the way, here's the full list of genres I use.

1. Alternative
2. Classic Rock
3. Metal
4. Pop
5. Punk
6. Rap
7. Rock
8. Techno

I don't really like having 6,000 genres. Only use I can find is when hunting Indie bands, Alt Metal ones generally kick ass.

Meh, I so freakin' lazy, I throw all *cough*downloads*cough* into one folder.

And just have a folder for each artist/band that I currently have on the ol' puter.

Man!!!! You need a friendly hacker to sort your system for you. But credit where credit's due, most women still don't know what MP3's are (it's true)....

I dunno. A good friend of mine is a woman who has known what an mp3 is for quite awhile, though she just realized how cool they can be for parties.

Anyways, my organization is like Shy's. Root/Artist/title.mp3 Media Monkey Rocks for Organization

Welcome to the club.

If a lazy person (like yourself) can do wonders with it, think what a control freak (like me) can do....

What's funny is Veruca Salt isn't even close to either of those genres. They're Alternative Rock, or maybe Alternative Pop/Rock.

Queercore is the likes of Team Dresch, while Riot Grrrl is made up of bands like Bratmobile, L7, Bikini Kill, and Sleater-Kinney.

How dare they pollute my favorite genre with Veruca Salt?!?!

(I do like Veruca Salt...got their first two albums...but they're not even close to Riot Grrrl.)

(...And I just realized the part about it "coming up" as those genres. That's exactly why I turn off anything that can "come up" on my ripper/encoder, like AMG/CDDB/freedb. I manually type in EVERYTHING. Even track numbers.)

I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash.

I have "C:\DC++\A-Z\Artist\Album\# - Name.mp3"

Media Monkey is the king for all of this. I don't like being in complete control 24/7, like Cylob is. I just like to know where it is, through the Artist, not genre. I have playlists for that.

I use the media library to maintain my obsessive control. I just organize em on my harddrive so I can find em quick in a pinch. Good ole custom views.

The only genre's I believe in or use are "good music" and "crap not worth listening to". I let CDDB tag my music when i rip it using CDex and when I'm done i use the mass tagging feature in the media library to remove the genre's from the tags.

This was my exact set-up man (file structure plus player). I've started moving bands into genre folders (for the benefit of slsk users)....

I wish I had the benefit of high bandwith to share the wealth, then I might think of doing the same and trying to spread the disease that is my musical taste to the world. I share mainly my bands that I downloaded from mp3.com for share on Soulseek. That way the RIAA won't have much to hit me for and I can spread the good Indies around

This thread reminds me of someone who posted a couple of years ago to complain that 'negerpunk' was listed in the id3v1 genre list.
Still waiting to meet someone who listens to that in order to know what it actually is

I don't know. I'm pretty sure I haven't got any negerpunk (though I may be wrong).
