drinking alcohol - what is too much?????

I dont really drink alcohol. Probably due to the fact my biological father is an alcoholic (clean for 20 years now) my ex step-father is an alcoholic and my ex-husband is an alcoholic.

I have seen first hand the negative things that happen when a person drinks.

I have a friend that has a couple of drinks about every other day "to relax". I personally feel that drinking alcohol that much is bad.

How much do you drink? What is concidered too much alcohol?

I did a test I found on a dutch internet site
and the outcome was I didn't drink too much.

I drink when I feel like it -
some weeks non - some week 2 or 3 nights a drink or two at max.

Each Thursday a new show on Celtica Radio with Darkwave music.

I can drink over 10 pints quite happily on a night out. But for just a few drinks at home 5 pints of Stella (5.2% btw) is just enough to send me to a nice nights sleep.

when ever they want me to stop - I will- i don't need a drink it's more a social event than a thing I need.

also trying to quit smoking - went from 25-30 smokes a day to 5 a day. ( already at that for a week now)

it's all in the mind. you can have a good time without a drink.

Each Thursday a new show on Celtica Radio with Darkwave music.

i drink far too much, but infrequently.

on a (large-ish) night out, i'll typically have 10-20 spirit drinks, or far fewer pints (beer doesn't agree with me).

the most i've ever drank at one time is three bottles of red wine, a couple of bottle of beer and a bottle of mezcal. i still managed to walk home, even if i couldn't get into my flat (i'd left my keys). i wouldn't recommend that to anyone, though.

Funny to see this thread - I was having the exact same conversation via IM when I saw it.

I don't usually drink that much - I like to have a few pints in the pub with friends the odd evening. After climbing every Thursday we usually head for a few pints together as a group, for example. And a night out (pub & club) at the weekend with friends would consist of 7 or 8 pints.

Having said that though, ahd a messy break-up recently with g/f (something I'm none too happy with), and have noticed I've been drinking quite a bit more often as of late (2pm onwards in the college bar last tuesday comes to mind), and while it's not a problem, it's something I'm acutely aware of and want to curb.

an appropriate thread, considering i have a mother of a hangover this morning
that said, i don't think i drink too much
i do not ever drink when i'm on my own, only when i'm out with friends
when i do go out, usually i will only have 3 or so pints, but last night we all decided to just go nuts
that is a rare enough occurance that it doesn't worry me

I can see absoloutly nothing wrong with that. A couple of drinks every other day is not a "drinking problem", and it is not unhealthy.
[edit: smoking on the other hand extreamly unhealthy and has no positive effects (which drinking does, in moderation) as far as I can see. The relexing you feel is just the removal of the anxity created by lack of nicotine]

If you only drink that much, then it is very much under control.

I have drunk lots on occasions, and as a student it is my duty to do so.

I drink about once ever month or so. I actually used to drink more which is weird, what with being 16 and all. Most i've ever drunk is one and a half litres of vodka in one night. That was messy. Very messy. Quite a learning experience.

alcohol has less long term damage than smoking, but can have more in the short term.

saying that, i've just been at the union bar after my exam and had 4 pints, now going out so probably another 2 or 3 pints and 8 bottles and a couple of shots.

I have two beers in my fridge that were left from my last RPG gathering. That was almost 2 months ago. I also have a bottle of Merlot that I bought almost 8 months ago sitting on top of my fridge, unopened. That's how often I drink...

I'd definatly agree that smoking is far more of a problem then a pint a day ever will be. And a drink after a long day is a great way to relax. But the even better drug would be weed, as that really does relax you and is far far far safer than drinking ever will be.

Do you want me to point out the number of people who die from alcahol related events every year? That includes drink driving, fights poisoning etc etc.

* Inhales Deeply* Totally agree

I used to work as a barman for awhile (Might not like Alcohol but I needed the job). The pub where I worked was frequented mainly by middle management and also the local Round Table crew and also the local Police would hold functions there.
I saw so called well to do people reduced to blithering idiots.
One was so disgusting that when the owner was away I would ban his ass on the spot till the owner came back. (I was the Manager there) This guy would come in on a saturday night, sit blocking the main way in and out from behind the bar. he would have about 7-8 pints, fall asleep by 11 ake up just before chucking out time, Puke all over the floor and stagger of home.
He only did it once when I was left in charge for the first time.
the police were the worst...they had a do one night (I was in charge as the owner wa son holiday). So it comes to throwing out time and they all start congregating out of the way in the back bar.
I get all the normal customers out, having covered the pumps with Bar towles etc. So this copper comes over and starts ordering drinks etc. I stand there, let him finish, smile sweetly and hand him the notice that all bars must have by law giving opening/closing times. I then go through the back to the kitchen, come back and he's standing there like I had just flipped out and asks 'where are the drinks'? I said where there staying in the barrel. Time has been called now please leave before I get the Police (He looked a bit incredulous at that). His face was apicture to be seen ... They all started in on me but I stuck to the letter of the law.

Man did I have a good laugh with teh other staff when we finally got rid of the idiots..

~true story~

That guy must have been smoking a whole hell of a lot of weed to turn psychotic, or maybe he was just psychotic to begin with and just ended up being worst off from weed. I know a lot of people who smoke a lot of weed, and most of them are just weird, not psychotic. I think it has more to do with the type of person who more likely smokes weed around my town, you are either a bad-ass gangster or a weird, trippy, anarchy type person.

-my 10 cents-Weed is not bad when used correctly, you can also learn some very weird/intimate things about people who you are with and I have found that it brings you closer to the people around you that you might be somking with. I am 100% for legalizing weed in the United States, because when used in moderation it can be very soothing, relaxing, socialy-positive past-time, not to mention that it also has a few health benefits and it is mostly non-habit forming.

//added//
Also a large portion of gang/drug related criminal activity would be removed if weed was legal. The best way to do would also to make it a goverment contolled like the Post Office, because not only could the government get some $$$ but it would remove the large expenses in these anti-drug campaings and other drug things. From my experience, most people are satisfied with weed, and given a quality, consistent place to purchase it from would be more then fine with just smoking weed and removing large portions of trafficking in other more dangerous/addictive drugs, (PCP, Crystal Meth, Acid, LSD, etc...)

Oh yeah, weed smells good too.

//on Topic
I drink more then I probably should, but luckily I have been doing a very good job of cutting back lately, (haven't drank a whole bottle of Vodka in a looooooooong time...)

I'm right there with you, hon. I smoked for 18 years, from age 16 until I quit on October 11, 2002 (at age 34). Then, I started again on Dec 31st last year after I got dumped (again).

I smoke between 15 and 20 cigs a day now, but when I start my new job, I'll go back on the patch and quit again.

As odd as this sounds, the strongest factor that help me quit before was the inconvenience of trying to find a place to smoke when you work in an office building where the only place you can go to do that is outside. Plus, dating is so much easier when I don't smoke. Women who do smoke don't shy away from a guy who doesn't. But many times, when I did smoke, non-smoking women turned their nose up at me. I like keeping my "options" open.

As for drinking, I only drink about 3 times a year, so my tolerance for alcohol is low. About 3 beers gets me good and drunk. But, IMO, it's not worth hangovers, making an ass of myself (I do that enough when I'm sober), or putting anyone at risk because of bad judgment that being drunk causes.

I've never in my life driven drunk. I have a "one drink rule". I'll have one (mild) drink and still drive. Any more than that and won't do it. So, with as infrequently as I drink, I'm usually the designated driver among my friends. Plus, I get to exercise my raw sense of sarcasm and have fun abusing them when their drunk. And in the morning, they don't remember any of it anyway.

Too much is letting a waste bin attack you, hugging a naked lady loads, puking uncontrolably when you wake up, telling your mum "hmm, did somebody eat on my bed last night" and her falling for it, having a shower to wash off a tiny bit of BLEEEUGH and then sitting down spinning with a headache posting on the winamp forums with work in 4 hours time.

Oh wait, yep that's happening to me right now

Had a competition to see who could drink 4 cans of Strogbows the fastest, I won, belched from my 4th whilst Marc was still on his 3rd, then grooved with the Baileys, then memories seem to be non existant ¬_¬

Uh oh. I'm apparently getting too drunk pretty often then, if it's what's responsible for me "hugging naked ladies".

It's one of my favorite things to do, but I don't seem to get a hangover from it. And I'm apparently blacking out since I never remember the "drinking" part. Oh well, guess I'll learn to live with my "drinking too much and hugging naked ladies" problem.

I'm going to die young

but i rather live my life the way i want too, do the things i like, and die 10 years younger, rather than giving up alot of life's pleasures, because it might or might not kill me. and im quite sure i won't be a hippocrit when the time comes.

I dive too, and do rockclimbing, which might also kill me, but it makes me feel alive. And i'm not going to give it up before im not physically able to do it.

Oh I don't "end up" hugging naked ladies. I "start off" hugging naked ladies.

And the equipment works fine most of the time. It only fails me every now and then, but unfortunately I think it's out of warranty.

No alcohol for me.
I'm 19, and I haven't had a drink of alcohol since my parents let me have tiny sips once a year at Christmas, which was at least 10 years ago.
(19 might not mean much to you, but it means I'm of legal drinking age here in Ontario, and have been for 3 weeks today. Plus I live in residence at university, on a heavily drinking floor. I'm confused as to why I'm not drunk a lot of the time. Ah well, I've always been a freak, no reason for being of age to change that.)

The world is made of conflicts: good and evil, order and chaos, light and dark, hot and cold. All are essential to life. None can prevail for any length of time, or life will fail. In the end, the best any can hope for is balance.
