What is Global Hotkey Support ?

When installing Winamp 5.01 I have to option to choose "Global Hotkey Support" or not. However it is not clear to me what is meant with this. In other words what does Global Hotkey Support do ? Probably it's because my knowledge of english language is not that good.
I already did a search, be it quick, but I can't find an explanation.

Global Hotkeys are keyboard shortcuts for Winamp that you can use regardless of what application is running.

Thanks James for your reply, but it's still not all clear to me. I understand this key thing, but what do you mean by "regardless of any application" ?

It means you can use a keyboard shortcut, which will cause Winamp to do something, even if you are using Internet Explorer at the time.

Better?
