ok, i tried to see if there had been a thread about this before, but im tired so i could have missed it. anyways, if you have just bought an album (doesnt have to be new really) rate it in here, or even do a wee review thinger i'll go first

Richie Sambora -- Undiscovered Soul

I bought this because he's the gituarist out of Bon Jovi, but this is not really much like Bon Jovi. Richie has a really good voice and is quite a talented song writer too. I would still prefer Bon Jovi, but i would recommend this to anyone. 4/5

Kid Rock - Kid Rock

I've always been a Kid Rock fan, for some reason. This was probably his worst album, but still pretty good. He's losing his "American Badass" name, his songs are getting more "feely" and slow, instead the kick ass songs he was doing a few years ago. 3/5

Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll

5/5 i love it. Probably not many peoples cup o' tea. But a true example of great metal. The riffs and use of the guitars and keyboard are reminiscant of great 80's sounds, but the bass equals out for a really great sound. A great ammount of melody and solos. Amazing stuff.

The good side of goth music, both male and female singers (tho mostly female.) Kinda reminds me of smashing pumpkins with how they could make an album full of fast and then really slow songs yet not feel disjointed or schizophrenic.

Year: 2002
Genre: Goth/Goth Metal/Darkwave

This band have been around since the 80's and have mastered their craft. The guitars are blazing, the vocals are angry yet inviting, there are intricate arrangements from start to finish.

A sophisticated, dark album.

Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.



The opening track is a killer,"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". The rest of this compilation, spanning only two years of his output, tries to keep up, but ultimately fails. It is a great way to appreciate Scott-Heron's music.

Hoobastank - The Reason (5/5)

Their sound seems to be getting similar to the distinct sound of incubus, and their musical talent is evolving at their same rate too. Their last self-titled album was good; This one is better. With lyrics that touch deeper into life such as "The Reason" and "Lucky" to the heavy riffs of "Same Direction" and "Out Of Control", a variation between aggressive playing to mellow lyrics, they bring a sense when listening to them that they've put more thought and dedication to making this album, rather than half-assing on it like most other new bands just starting now-a-days.

I had this album previously, but "loaned it" to someone, and never saw it again. It's the "far extreme" of my taste in Riot Grrrl music. It's poorly engineered, and to be honest it's pretty hard to listen to. But hey, it's Kathleen Hanna, the queen of the genre, so that earned it a couple of points alone. I like the originality of the music in general, but as I said, it's the "edge of the envelope" for me. If you're brave and have a strong stomach for severe guitar and vocal distortions, try it out.

I like this one a lot, but it's too short. Six tracks, 12:12 total length. Short even for an EP. If it were a full album, I'd have rated it a little higher...twelve minutes is just too short. I really like Bratmobile, and this album is a sarcastic punk romp into "anti-valley girl parody". Worth the $4 I paid for it (used).

Her debut album. I've had her latest album What If It All Means Something for a few months, and I'm still undecided which of these is better. Under These Rocks And Stones is definitely more "raw". On this one her songwriting shines more than her voice, even. But her voice still soars higher on her last album. This one is more introspective, as many debut albums are by solo artists in this genre.

I love L7. They're my favorite Riot Grrrl band by far, and one of my favorite bands overall. I had this CD for years, also, but lost it a few months ago. This one has the acclaimed tracks Fast And Frightening and Shove, which by themselves make the album worth the entry price, but every song is great though. I can listen to this album over and over and not get tired of it. The only reason I don't give it a 5 outright is because I'm undecided which L7 album is my favorite.

Listening to this one now, as a matter of fact. It's a bit of a cross between the alternative band "Hole" and the more raucous "Bikini Kill". They have a unique vocal overlay and percussion style among Riot Grrrl bands. I like Sleater-Kinney a little more than Bratmobile overall, and this album (their second) is among their best, IMO.

Elvis Costello is not well known, but many of his songs are, as well as his embarkment into the strange sounds of the late 70's. Just a good album, if you're into that type o' thang. Like me. Good shit, through and through.

Stereolab - Margerine Eclipse

Genre: Ambient Pop

Named in honour of Mary Hansen (Marge), a core member who died in December 2002. Like all other 'lab albums there's a barrier to be broken. On the 1st listen - nothing, 2nd - nothing, 3rd - some twinkly/sparkly bits detected, 4th - bits of melodies here and there, 5th - larger melodies detected.

On the 6th listen (3.00am through the portable), the album bursts into life. Full-bodied melodies everywhere, all Stereolab attributes are present and correct.

Another fantastic album. One point deducted for the dog barking in the opening track though.

One of two CDs I have ever bought, and I love it. Some songs are maybe too slow for someone else, but that's fine with me, because than the whole CD is not so "one-stylish".
Generally I find it a good mixture of happy-punk-rock and ska, Armstrong's ex-band (Operation Ivy) use to play punk/ska/reggae and the influence is still big in Rancid.
And the video for "Ruby Soho" is great (not on CD).

incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder (5/5)

Once again, incubus has released another album that shows their progress over the years since their days of "S.C.I.E.N.C.E" up to the recent "Morning View"...This one being a bit more mellow such as alot of the songs off of "Morning View", but the style has somewhat gone back to the days of "Make Yourself", with the lyrics taking on such topics from the general public, rather than personal issues...Unfortunatly, the guy with the mustache (What's his name? ) is no longer on the cover of this album... But yes, incubus fans, the phaser effect is still in use...

I'm still getting into the jazz scene, but this CD really helps the transition from rock. Track 3, 'Slow Change' is unbelievable. I saw him play recently at the Jazz Cafe in London, stunning playing. Highly recommended

The last album I bought ?

Hmmm.....

Guess that would have to be The Strange - Comin' Undone (Single). Contains the title song, which is one of the most memorable ones from the main album (though not my favorite anymore), 3 great Phil Brown remixes of the most boring (but still nice) song from the main album (Long Shadows). Aaaaand by far my favorite part..

Three live tracks recorded on their concert in my hometown. And I've been there. Right next to the stage. Oh, and those three track might just be the best from the main album (the cover of Echo & The Bunnymen song Villier's Terrace is stunning).



9.5/10 for a single. As an album 6.5 or 7/10 (those remixes are great, but can be really monotonous).

Shpongle - Nothing Lasts... but Nothing is Lost


Latest album from Shpongle doesn't fail to live up to my expectations of insane symphonic electronic wizardry. This album seems to have a stronger latin/spanish influence than previous albums that were more indian in inspiration, though both voices are still there amidst the psychedelic musical meanderings of Simon Posford and Raja Ram.

An observation I once made of shpongle's songs were that they were basically two or three songs mixed together into one. It's seems Shpongle has noted that also as on this CD there are 20 tracks where previous albums have been 7 and 9 tracks long. Though the various tracks on this album mix into one another, the first three songs glom together into one larger song as themes intermingle between tracks though one track is defined by a seperate dominant theme. Similarly, the fourth and fifth tracks can be taken as a single song, and so on through out the album.

I give this a 8 out of 10 as there is an electric guitar track towards the end that gets kind of repetetive and doesn't seem as inspired as the usual shpongle fare.

Allmusic says it's like The Cranes meet Drain S.T.H. although I'm content with it being a less poppy Evanescence. Either way they kicked ass and it sucks they broke up after one album. RIP

I can't say enough about the gathering. This particular CD is their current lineup doing the early, early death metal they started playing with the prog style. A+

On suggestions from cylob and the fact I'm totally addicted to curve,I picked up this oldy. One of only two CD's I picked up today I've never heard but I have faith in Curve.

As irony has it, a Curve freak in San Diego got me into Kidneythieves in '98 ("Taxicab Messiah" was the opening track of a mix-tape he made). I like their abrasiveness, it's one of the few tracks I can hear over the washing machine. Reminds me very much of Medicine, who use a similar layering technique.

Metallica - S&M {1999}

I thought it was brilliant. It took me a while to become used to a symphony working in time with 'Tallica, but after that it was awesome. And visually the performance was excellent.
