Five-star Beyoncé leaves Grammys Crazy in Love

Los Angeles - R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles won five Grammy Awards, but missed a clean sweep when English rock band Coldplay surprisingly won the coveted record of the year prize.

Awards were spread widely yesterday. Stroke-afflicted soul singer Luther Vandross won song of the year, hip-hop duo OutKast took album of the year and rock band Evanescence won best new artist.

Vandross, who did not attend the ceremony but sent a recorded message that was played during a tribute segment, won four Grammys.

His song of the year prize, which he shared with co-writer Richard Marx, was for Dance with My Father, the title track from his hit album.

Along with OutKast, rapper Jay-Z and producer Pharrell Williams, Knowles had led the Grammy contenders with nominations in six categories. The 22-year-old frontwoman with R&B trio Destiny's Child was lauded largely for her debut solo release, Dangerously in Love.

She and boyfriend Jay-Z also shared Grammys for the song, Crazy in Love, which won for rap/sung collaboration and R&B song.

Rock Band Evanescence Wins Best New Artist Grammy

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock band Evanescence, which created a storm in the Christian music community last year by disavowing its spiritual roots, won the Grammy Award for best new artist on Sunday, its second award at the event.
Also nominated were rapper 50 Cent, rock band Fountains of Wayne, soul singer Heather Headley and Jamaican reggae singer Sean Paul.

Evanescence, which was nominated for five awards overall, first won attention within the Christian music community. But a year ago, the band opted to focus on the more lucrative secular market.

Singer Amy Lee said in an interview last April that if Christian bookstore owners listened to the band's debut CD, "Fallen," they would pull it from the shelves. Its label, Wind-Up Records, promptly recalled the album and singles from Christian stores and radio stations.

It earlier won a Grammy for best hard rock performance.

Mikhail Gorbachev receives Grammy Award


Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton and Sophia Loren have received a Recording Academy award -"Grammy-2004". All of them were nominated in the "Spoken Word Album for Children" category for their work on the "Peter and the Wolf" CD.

Sophia Loren tells the story of Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf", Bill Clinton introduces Jean-Pascal Beintus' "Wolf Tracks" and Mikhail Gorbachev narrates the epilogues and prologues for both stories. The producers of this project promise to release a Russian version of the disc as well.

I really enjoyed this years show.
They made this one about the music, and that's what it's about.
Lots of good performances.
Say what you will about Beyonce and Christina, but they can sing.
And if Brittney was watching, I'll bet she dropped her
head and started crying during Christina's song,
wondering why she can't sing live like that.
Robert Randolph & The Family Band blew me away.
Enough so I'm gonna go look for their CD.

When he didn't get any awards, and when he lost "Best New Artist",
he got up and walked across the stage in front of Evanescence,
disrupting their acceptance speech.

Well although I don't see myself as a goth, and it usually has a negative connotation, the 3 associations by Cylob seem to be quite positive ones so thank you And I do listen to bands like Theatre of Tragedy so you'd have a point music-wise

A mixed bag indeed. "Performance" alone is, I think, rather a strong term for St. Anger....

Some of the less mainstream awards I think are well deserved (Howard Shore got best film soundtrack for LOTR:TTT, plus a few others).

But yeah. What is Pink doing in rock? Evanescence isn't that great, and I'm in two minds about the White Stripes. I'm not even going to comment on the pop category.

And Dave Matthews always seems to get these sort of awards... there seems to be a conspiracy going on there...

The best part of the show, in my opinion, was the funk extravaganza!

Earth, Wind and Fire, Outkast, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, and several others threw a 20 minute party right in the middle of the broadcast. It made me want to jump up and dance.

Unfortunately, the guy from Earth, Wind and Fire who used to do the falsetto wasn't able to pull it off, but I don't think anyone cared so much. It was just a thrill to see them again. And George Clinton was moving pretty slow, and Parliament's set wasn't as "crisp" as it used to be so long ago. Mostly because they took a LOT of preparation to do their shows, and the "mixed up", over-populated gig was pretty out of control, so the music didn't come across so well. I just hope no one judges them based on that performance. The nostalgia factor was in full overdrive, though. They can still throw one helluva party!

At the end of it, they must have had over 200 performers across the stage, wall-to-wall, playing instruments, singing and dancing. It was incredible. The biggest funk party I've ever seen. Everyone in the audience was on their feet, dancing and clapping in time with the music. I could feel the energy through my television.

It's also why I liked Robert Randolph & The Family Band so much.
Today I went and looked at their site, and downloaded some of their music.
Really impressive stuff...to me.
In these days and times, when most young black artists want to be rappers,
it's great to see someone dare to do something different.

I didn't watch them, sadly I don't think I watch award shows. Too many commercials and just many artists to hear about. Plus I just like the highlights of just the people that did very well after the awards ceremony and those who reaped the awards. Kinda like last year's with Norah Jones. This year, Beyonce.
