Genres (which one to use)?

I'm reorganising my MP3's, storing bands in genre folders. Now this comes with a problem. Take a band like.....

Underworld

AMG
Progressive House, Electronica, Techno, House

Which single genre would you use?

Choices.

For now, I've selected Progressive House.

Another:

Thievery Corporation:
Electronica, Downbeat, Trip-Hop, Club/Dance, Acid Jazz

I selected Trip-Hop, but, I have a feeling they're more of a downtempo band.

I did have such a system:

A+ Side = Awesome | A Side = Good | B Side = Try Harder Next Time!

But, storage became a problem. I had A-Z folders initially, but the more music I got, the more cumbersome it all was....

Also, if you study a band's genre, you get a feel for where they fit in the musical map. If you like 'band x1', the chances are you'll be able to put your finger on 'band x2' without much fuss (having done the research).

I have gone from genre-less to genres (and all the trimmings) in 3 months. There's no going back to A-Z. I'll have to suffer.

I don't try to put music into a genre. I just listen to what I like.

Collapse it to base, as far base as you can go. I'd drop them in a folder called Techno.

How about a nested Genre directory structure?

Chose a general name (i.e. something common to all those listed) for the Genre folder, which in your case is Electronica. If reqd., make a sub-folder within Electronica, called 'Progessive House' & store the MP3 file within that directory.

Much more organized & easier to locate

just go by the alphabet and forget about genres

take only the complete Neil Young collection it covers over 6 or 7 genres - nice all over your HD instead of having it nicely under the Y or N.

about blur - would go under "not worth listening to"

Each Thursday a new show on Celtica Radio with Darkwave music.

I'd second spaceplay on that. But I have my one blur song filed under rock. Course the only listenable song they have is Song 2.

I still reckon A-Z is a cop-out...

People like labelling, pigeonholing, catergorising, measuring, weighing (whatever). This time next year I'll have 100 genre folders.
