Should I use a key-logger to spy on my younger sister?

Hi …….writing something in the forum after a long break (22 days lol), I was very busy with my study exams, interviews…..but now, don’t know why feeling little uneasy..... I wonder do ya’ll feel like that after coming back from a gap?

Anyways lemme ask a serious question here……my only younger sis is 14 and now-a-days she’s spending a lot of time in internet. Specially as I wasn’t at home these days she had free access .…Now that I’m staying in home she told me to give her some privacy! Our pc is in my room and she is telling I can’t stay there while she uses the computer…
I wonder what the hell is wrong with her? She don’t chat much but I’ve noticed she gets lots of mails and answers lots of mails as well…..So I’m very tensed about her. I mean ........I can’t explain, she is still immature and net is not a very safe place for her. Moreover she’s my responsibility, my parents who are full aware of the negative sides of internet, allowed me to have connection in home only after I make them sure nothing bad will happen…they were surely tensed about her more than me.
So now, should I use some key-logging tools to trace what she’s doing in net? I mean should I check her mail accounts and messenger to know with whom she’s mixing? Will that be right? I mean I love her a lot…. what if she knows it later? She will be very hurt. Perhaps she will never forgive me. What if someone i.e. my parents do the same thing with me? I would obviously get angry with them too…but again I’m 19 I can take care of myself but she is 14 only. Moreover in this age how come she has something that private that I can’t see?….
I’m just confused….Actually these are things that I’m telling myself still I find my logics ain’t enough, …some suggestion with reasons that whether I should use a key-logger for spying on her net activity or not will be very helpful….

Have you tried just talking to her about it first? I realise that's no as easy as it sounds, and you don't want to just sit there lecturing her on the 'dangers of the internet', but maybe she'd tell you a bit about what she's doing and you could give advice or whatever.

try talking to your parent first and see if they think it is ok. they might want you to do it if they also is worried.

I suggest finding a program that takes a screenshot every so often, rather than a keylogger. That way you can read the incoming messages aswell.

I agree with Cognition, talk to her about it, and make her aware that your there to look out for her and help her if she needs and wants it.

Don't spy on her.
I'm a younger 14 year old sis and I find it irritating when my older brothher sits behind me. It just makes me feel un-easy I don't know why.
Just check on her every now and then and if she still tells u to go away ask why, and tell her if she wont tell you then she wont be allowed to use the internet, simple

Since you are an older sister you should be looking out for your sibling.

I am always watching what my boys are doing on the internet and I do value their privacy but at the same time it is my job as a concerned parent to look after them and what they are doing.

If your parents are not watching after her internet activities I find it noble that you care enough about her well being that you want to take on the responsibility.

Try talking with her first. I dont know the relationship that you two share but it sounds like she does not want you knowing what she is doing on the net ie:dont be in your room when I am on the computer. so she may not open up to you.

If you feel she may be in some danger I dont see anything wrong with "spying" on her. It is for her own good. You may find she is just chatting innocently with her friends.

I would rather be safe than sorry.

Get yourself a yahoo.com mail account and set it to check her mail account (without deleting her mail from her server). Check for a few days until you get bored reading her emails from her 14-year-old frineds.

Dont worry, he makes most people un-easy, he's just a bit freaky.

My advice is to first talk, then if that provides no results use a screenshot program.

Or you could Lock out some websites wich you consider "Unsutable", there are ways to do it that most people wont know how to bypass.

The computer is in your room. If anything she is invading YOUR privacy when she enters your room to use the computer.

try talking to her, maybe all she is doing is going and playing stupid rocket power games on nick.com

If you do decide to go ahead and spy on her, let her know. Just don't tell her by what means you are doing it. She will get paranoid and not do what she is not supposed to do.

Sure, I read my own home acount mail from work this way. All you need is her incoming mail address, login and password info. If she's on his computer that shouldn't be too hard to find. ;-)

Well, I know her incoming mailing address but don't know the password...that’s why I need to use a key-logger....
But after reading your replies ,I would like to give her a last chance; I'll try to talk with her tomorrow about what exactly she's doing that I can't stay in the room....
though I’m not very hopeful cause we are not very free and she is very very very introvert ..... may be she won't tell anything .....
And yes, my parents are not much careful about what we do in net...I mean they have great faith on me and gave me her responsibility....now if I say directly that I'm feeling something bad might happen because of excess net access....the result will not be very good for me.100% possibility that my parents will cut the internet connection.I can’t take that risk…..I need to do something myself.

The keylogger I use from time to time is the one recommended from The Screen Savers and it works in the OS background (cuz I'm to cheap to get the hardware one! ) and it works nicely (only text though, no screenshots).

Maybe she wants her privacy because she's looking at porn? In which case I'd get the screenshot one so you can see what she's doing and then you can ban her from the computer or filter such filthy sites.

So what if she is? Its not damaging or destructive. It's just people with no clothes on, something everyone at that age is interested in. Its not something people should be protected from, it wont warp peoples minds. It's fun, exciting, interesting, a learning experiance etc.

She probably works for the ICA (the CIA is just thier cover - even what the classification level you need to see what the abbreviation stands for is classfied).

She's probably working for them. What you need is a phone tap, at least three hidden cameras on different methods of signal communication, a key logger, a physical key logger, and you should probably build a hardware monitor-to-TV adapter so you can see what's on the screen.

Personally I'm against key-logging, just because it's an invasion of privacy. If I found out I was being logged, I'd be really offended. It's a stupid invention that, and only feeds into already misinformed, paranoid parents.

I agree with White Raven. If you think she's doing anything wrong, just don't let her use the computer. You should never spy on people. If you're trying to "protect" her, you're better off installing blocking software to stop her from doing certain things, rather than a key logger to see what she's already done.

I agree to an extent. Yes I do believe that she deserves a level of privacy but as far as I know the computer is in apolas room. Now, if my little brother told me to get out of my room so that he could use my computer I would (and have) log all activities on my computer.
In my opinion, the little sister in this case is violating apolas privacy by making her leave her own room. If you don't want to give me my privacy you should expect NO privacy from me.

Ok…. I’ve tried to talk with her today.......
I took her to a ice-cream parlor today and started talking casually .after some time I asked her that why does she mind if I stay when she access the net? I wanted to know what does she do? Well, she answered me nothing special…..but she prefer to stay alone. Even she asked me back how would I feel if she stays all the time while I brose the net. Tell ya what I really find it hard to keep my patience while talking with her …..I asked her that is it anything personal that I can’t see I mean does she talk with her bf (lol! ya she has a bf ..nothing serious just another kid from her class).She answered me “why do we need net to talk while we’ve got cell-phones?”

Anyways I preferred what the majority told here…I’m not going to install any key-logger right now but take some protection….I mean I’ll introduce some password protection to make sure she can’t use my computer during my absence and will ban all the harmful sites ….I’ve also check the history items and didn’t find anything harmful. Still I need to know with whom she’s mixing…...Thats what I'm mainly worried about,I mean there are so many frauds in net …I told her not to judge people from how their appearance in net and it will be best if she don’t mix with people in net that much….
I hope she will listen to me.... so that I don’t need to do anything……… I’ll try to watch her for sometime…..if still I feel there’s something suspicious …..I’ll use a key-logger …….no matter I feel guilty for it or not

Nope you shouldn't spy on her and yes I can understand your concerns. And unless you have a cache cleaner (Internt Tracks Eraser) you don't need a key logger any way. Simply look in the temp internet files to see where she has been. (Internet Explorer/Right Click/Properties/Settins/View Files) If she didn't 'Log-Out' you have access to every thing that she has done in e-mails!!
So you don't need a key logger go look in your temp internet files. You'll know yopur own stuff and you can then isolate her stuff.
Not saying you should do that but it is nice to hear that you care enough to look out for your sis

when we were 14 we were smart enough to think of these things. Do what you think is right but don't underestimate her genius.
