What concerts have you been to?

Hey everybody,

I searched the music forums but surprisingly haven't found a thread like this, only about certain concerts...I hope I did search right

So what I would like to know, what concerts have you been to in your life? You don't have to list all of them just the ones that were special or important to you and comment a little on them hoe they were. You could also tell us which band you absolutely would like to see in concert one day.

Alright, I'll start, I've seen so far (not that much yet, I'm still young and in no particular order as well!):

• Jet - just saw them yesterday night, that's why the idea for this thread, the concert was way better than their CD, they played the songs a little faster and the crowd was amazing, they played in a small hall for about 200 people but the athmosphere was great! Support was the Stands, I heard they were kind of famous in the UK, I never heard of them before but they qere quite alright.
• Marilyn Manson - last December, I only went because a friend of mine took me with him, he found a cheap ticket for me in front of the concert hall so it was a spontaneous decision for me to go, the concert was really good, he played lots of his old songs which I like a lot better, I only came out of the hall with a lot of bruises because it seems like all Manson fans are at least 6 foot tall and really strong My friend lifted me up on his shoulders a lot so I could see very well though.
• James Brown - years ago at an open air festival, he's old but he can still do it!
• Die Aerzte - very well known (in Germany that is) German Punk band, around since the 80s. It was my dream since I was a little child to go see thiem, this winter I finally had the chance to. They played for more than 2 hours and it was great, my dream coming true!
• Bloodhound Gang...alright I was only 14 and didn't know better, the concert was fun though. I was in the first row and even got up on stage for a couple of songs and got a pic plus a t shirt from them
• Bad Religion - Now that concert was awesome, we were there a few hours early because they only had 5 tickets for sale left and you had to stand in line until 7 PM so you were the first one to get it...meanwhile Jay Bentley, the Bassist came out and talked to us, brought us beer and chips and chatted with us for about an hour, it was very interesting and he's the man with the best sounding laughing I have every met in my whole life!
• Placebo - I really like them, they are a secret teenie obsession of mine Saw them at an open air festival, if I wouldn't have been that drunk I could remember more of it. Damn.
• Manu Chao - I was in first row as well which became kind of uncomfortable with 30,000 people behind you but the concert was nice, not really my music but still alright.
• Garbage - great concert as well!
• The Rolling Stones - Thanks to my parents who bought a 3rd ticket for me, otherwise I couldn't have afforded it! The show was completely awesome of course and Mick can still "dance" great!
• Others I have seen as supprt acts or on open air festivals: Peaches, Indochine, Kelis, Pet Shop Boys...

Two bands I would have loved to see back then when I was not born yet: Pink Floyd and Queen...

So, what about you others? I'm interested in hearing your concert experiences!

My gig-going days were mainly 1990-95. I've seen a fair few bands.

But alas, my geography and lack of transport have put-pay to all that.

•First concert was a Buckcherry/Fuel/Kid Rock concert in 2000...Didn't expect anything less from Buckcherry or Kid Rock, but Fuel was a band I had never heard of before...I thought they would suck, but since they were touring with Kid Rock, I guess they would at least have something...Boy, was I surprised when they came out! Kid Rock got the audience's money's worth by extending his performance nearly 2-3 hours long...During the beginning of the concert, David Allen Coe came out...Let's say his one-man show was on the funny-type "WTF? " chart...

•Last summer (2003), Joan Jett was having a free concert during the State Fair...It was free, and it was pretty decent... The lead guitarist that dressed with a mohawk, short-top, and skirt totally threw me off (Which was a HE)...

•Then about Sept. or something, I went to the annual LRS Fest (Local concert thing held my rock station 105.1 WLRS)...Some no-name bands came (Some where good, especially StereoGram, who were a small Australian band that did a cover on AC/DC's "Back In Black" ), 1 local band (Which sucked... ), and to top it off, Trapt and Suicidal Tendencies were performing... Unfortunatly, I only stayed as long to see Trapt and then left... But they were still good live...Did not like Trapt AT ALL before seeing them live, but it all changed after then...

•This Friday (the 27th), I'll be seeing Kid Rock again, with Puddle Of Mudd being the opening act...My first two actual concerts were Kid Rock concerts...Hmm... Can't wait...And although I liked Puddle Of Mudd's stuff off of their first album "Come Clean", alot of their new stuff off of "Life On Display" are kinda repetative...Maybe they'll sound better live...If it worked for Trapt, it might work for them...

Frenzal Rhomb (didn't really like their stuff, but i was dragged to it by friends)

I went to another Living End concert in december last year, those guys put on an amazing live show

And I'm going to blink on the 19th of March.

You're havin' a larf, ain't you, you expect me to remember

Seen so many good bands over the years, so much good music that it's hard to pick out just a few.

I guess the ones that really stand out are the ones that have other things attatched, something that made them special.

Rolling Stones, sometime in the 60s, my first major concert, It had all been dance hall bands up until then. They were good, but I missed the dancing.

Joni Mitchell, at Wembly sometime in the 80's. She broke her dulcimer and I lent her mine. Got backstage passes and an invite back to the hotel after the show. (She got it mended in time and didn't use mine in the end)

The Levellers, Glastonbury. First time I'd heard of then and it was one of the freshest, livest sets ever. My musical palette was getting a bit jaded at the time and they really cheered me up and gave some new faith.

Ry Cooder, Hammersmith Odeon around the time of 'Bop 'til You Drop', Good concert, one of those beautiful warm summer's evenings that go on for ever, A walk along the river afterwards and the re-awakening of an old romance.

Niel Young, nuff said, always good value.

Sting, most dissapointing ever, totally pretentious, took nearly an hour to get set up what with half an orchestra and a 20 piece choir. Christie Moore walked out on stage within 5 mins of the set ending, just a guitar, blew him away.

Robin Williamson (ex I.S.B.) many, many Glastonburys and always a favourite, almost a tradition.

Bob Dylan a couple of times, one very early in his career, the other at the IOW.

Pink Floyd, again in the early days when they were the band with the light show and Sid Barrett was at his maddest.

Bands I'd like to have seen, Allman Brothers, Steely Dan (though I don't think they did any concerts), The Who.

My first ever gig was the Sex Pistols at the Fforde Green in Leeds, Nov 1976. I'd just turned 12 years old, hehe.

The Clash, Damned & Stranglers also played there in 1977.
I think it was at the Damned gig where the place got trashed, and closed down for 5 years, lol.

Futurama Festival @ Leeds Queens Hall, 1979 & 1980
I can't remember now who played which year, but over the 2 years I remember the following bands just like it was yesterday
Hawkwind, Joy Division, Siouxsie, PiL, Cabaret Voltaire, A Certain Ratio, Comsat Angels, OMD, Echo And The Bunnymen, The Fall, The Only Ones, Robert Fripp's League Of Gentlemen, Durutti Column, Bill Nelson's Red Noise, Clock DVA, Altered Images, Soft Cell, and many more.

Brannigans F-Club, Leeds 1977 - 1980 ish:
Joy Division, The Fall, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, SLF, 999, Dead Kennedys, Lurkers, Slaughter & The Dogs, each about 3 to 5 times,
plus heaps and heaps of other punk/post-punk/new wave bands, too many to list here.

Leeds Uni and Leeds Poly 1978-81
Bauhaus, Crass, Killing Joke, The Cure, Gang of Four, Buzzcocks, SLF, Magazine, Psychedelic Furs, Ramones, and more.

Also seen Hawkwind about 10 times at Leeds Uni 1979 - 2000 ish (it's the only place they ever play in Leeds).

Tangerine Dream - Manchester Apollo 1986
Definitely one of the best gigs ever!

Another top event was Reading Festival 1983
Black Sabbath, The Enid, Marillion, Stranglers, Thin Lizzy, Steel Pulse (top dub reggae band who got bottled off half way through their first song), and more... hmm, now why can't I remember any of them?


It was around this time that I started going to the Stonehenge and Glastonbury Festivals. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen the likes of Hawkwind, Ozric Tentacles, Magic Mushroom Band, Outback (Dr Didg), Porcupine Tree ...
This is also where I first met Bob & Michael Dog of Megadog.
I met up with them again in the early 90's and they agreed to let me co DJ at all the Megadogs @ Leeds Uni (also did a few at Sheffield, Manchester, and Club Dog in London)
Some of the bands that played back in those days (1993-98) ...
Underworld (with Darren Emerson), Orbital, Eat Static, DreadZone, TransGlobal Underground, Children of the Bong*, Astralasia, System 7 (Steve Hillage!), Banco de Gaia, Headrillaz, Speedy J, Loop Guru, Suns of Arqa*, Zion Train, Spooky, and heaps more (*also played a few gigs with separately to Megadog).

The best one though was definitely the Phoenix Festival, Stratford-Upon-Avon, 1996
Played 3 DJ sets on the Megadog Stage and one set on Radio One Stage.
Most memorable bands:
Prodigy, William Orbit's Strange Cargo, Underworld, Eat Static...
Most memorable DJ Sets:
Sasha & Digweed, Oakenfold, Andy Weatherall, Goldie/Metalheadz, etc.

Bands/Artistes which played on the main stage:
Sex Pistols, David Bowie, Neil Young, Bjork, Massive Attack, Manic Street Preachers, Skunk Anansie, Beck, Foo Fighters, and heaps more.


Heh, the only other major bands I've seen (apart from Santana @ London Royal Albert Hall, 1982) were at Leeds Roundhay Park, mid 80's to early 90's. Let's see... who played there now?
Genesis, Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, Status Quo, Simple Minds, U2, Madonna, Michael Jackson.
Well, they were all freebies, so wtf eh? lol. Genesis were bloody good though.

Hmm, there must be more...
Oh yes, Jethro Tull @ Nostell Priory Folk Festival, sometime in the mid 80's.

I haven't been to any gigs in the past 3 years or so, ever since I've been doing these forums... but that's another story :/

Glastonbury wouldn't be complete. Always found myself moving towards the top field as the evening wore on into the night.

Almost certain our paths must have crossed in the past then. (Scary thought )

Yeah, I've been to a fair few Glastonburys in the 80's and early-to-mid 90's... funny thing is though, I can hardly remember anything about them. Hehe

Except for: Outback/Dr Didg, Ozrics & Hawkwind sets in the Green Field area. Yeah, I always kept away from the main stage for some reason, and was always in with the Travellers and Mutants.
