They need to keep the money comming in. Longhorn is a long way off yet, XP sales falling as more people already have it, people not getting XP because they're waiting for Longhorn etc etc.

Well, in any case, all my new systems from now on will be either dual-boot linux & windows, where each OS is on a separate physical drive, or purely linux. I will still however have to keep MS around for communication reasons and for programs I use. :/

I dont think many people are holding off getting XP because Longhorn is coming soon. Longhorn might be out in 2005, so that means 1 year+ until the release. If I had an older OS I would get XP now, and then maybe update to longhorn. Also, the people who are going to be interested in getting LongHorn ASAP most likly have XP right now anyway.

Wow...some people sure do forget that they're not supposed to buy software the day it comes out. They're supposed to wait a few months until they find something terribly wrong with it.

I'm dual booting Red Hat Linux 9 and Windows98.

I like to think of 98 as "the last Windows you'll ever need." I've never found any Windows applications that won't work with it, so why on earth would I want to upgrade? Microsoft doesn't need my money. By the time 98 is finally obsolete, I should be able to use Linux for all applications.

XP? Longhorn? Not in this life.

NTFS alone is reason enough to upgrade I'd say.

d0rk: There are plenty of businesses still running NT-4 quite happily who will not want to upgrade to 2k just intime for it to become obsolete.

NTFS alone is a reason not to upgrade, in my opinion...especially if you're dual-booting Windoze/Linux, like I do. When it's patents you're concerned about, then it's questionable whether Microsoft even owns the rights to NTFS, or FAT even since they claim they own it. For this reason, Redhat and SuSE have said that they will not put NTFS write support in their distros.

if you're only using windows, however, NTFS is a fantastic filesystem.
