Bands which revolutionized their genre

Can you name a band which produced some extrordinary music, which completely revolutionized their genre; i.e. they set an example for what their genre should sound like (every person who followed that genre were the biggest fans of the band, and they even influenced several other artists)?

I'd name a few from my experience:

New Age - Enigma
Trance - Robert Miles
New Wave - (needless to say, since you may have already guessed it )

I think the definitive New Wave albums were:

and...

Ultravox and Visage may be contenders....

FGTH didn't set any trends, but they did have a massive impact on the charts....... I'd say their style was unique, and hasn't yet been copied.

Can you think of another band who created such a national uproar and shook the establishment in a way the pistols did? and this with something like 15 original songs to their name.

Bollocks still sounds as fresh as it did 25 years ago and was surely a defining momment on the punk scene.

this album is the foundation of the grunge music-
bands like nirvana and pearl jam would have been nowhere without this album by Neil Young , the founder of grunge.

Each Thursday a new show on Celtica Radio with Darkwave music.

AMG REVIEW: The LP that jump-started the entire electronic/classical fusion fad during the late '60s and early '70s, Switched-On Bach is a set of rote interpretations performed with Moog synthesizer with little to offer listeners other than those interested in the album for its novelty flavor. -- John Bush

The first death metal album:

Death - Scream Bloody Gore

Definately not the first, but probably the most important melodic death album.

In Flames - Jester Race

One of the most important metal albums there is:

Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast

My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything (1988)

MBV didn't invent dreampop (by any means), but they defined it.

Suicide (1977)

The original electro-duo: Alan Vega and Martin Rev.

It's been said their first album originally sold less than 1000 copies but everyone who bought it formed a band.

(btw Rev once accused Soft Cell of being mere copycats )

So very true, space I remember listening to Neil Young when I was very young, and a lot of the grunge acts owe a lot to him.
