Pictures of the day [July 13]

Hey everybody,

Flooded: It's the worst flood in the new history of the Indian state of Assam - after exceptional heavy monsoon rain you can travel only with a boat now, as you can see in this picture taken close to Mandakata. The state Assam is fully flooded according to the government. Altogether more than 120 people already lost their lives in this area due to the rain and mass amount of water flooding it.

Fired:( ) The flame coming from the lighter looks hilariously small against the huge fire in the background. In the night before the Belfast march a lot of bonfires were started to celebrate the victory of the Protestant King William over the Catholic King James II. The Catholics found the fires as a prvocation and the celebrations lead to disturbances taht night.

Totally. Interesting, up to date information with involving, visually pleasing masterpiece photographs. Your "Picture of the day" threads have become somewhat poetic in nature.

Have you ever considered working for a newspaper?

Thanks everyone

squakMix - I am studying Biochemistry so I'm far from that Newspaper job, but maybe I'll be writing scientific articles one day and putting some nice pictures taken with a polarized light filter in there, which can look really awesome:

This is merely drops of starch by the way.

There are way better ones out there but I was too lazy to look this time Thanks for thinking that I could work there, I appreciate it!

Would those cells (or what are they?) move the same way?

I haven't seen the AVS you are talking about but I am sure these cells won't move at all.

I'm not exactly sure what the first picture is but it looks like a cut through a stem of some sort to me so they are all bound together and don't wander around...the second one are, as I said, starch drops, you could get that kind of picture by cutting a potato open, pressing the inside on a piece of microscpe glass and look at the drops that stick to the glass in polarized light, so they are not floating around or moving either.

Could someone be so kind and give me the link to the AVS, it sounds pretty cool! ^_^

Thanks for explaining
Didn't know what starch drops were, but I think I get it.

Well, I don't know which one horse-fly meant (if a specific one at all, maybe one she made herself), but I know AVS's moving, so that's why I asked if those cells move as well. I didn't have a specific one in mind. Would be cool though
