hurricane news coverage

Over the past six weeks, the state of Florida has been hit by four hurricanes: Charley, Frances, Ivan, and the latest, Jeanne.

However, what strikes me as odd is that every major American cable news channel that I've seen covering these hurricanes, CNN, MSNBC, and the Fox News Channel, has found it absolutely necessary to send out a reporter to the state of Florida to be pounded by rain near the storms.

Has the news media's credibility dwindled so low that they need to have people standing relatively near the paths of the storms for us to actually believe them when they say there is a hurricane? What's the point?

The media's always done that. They're just doing it more often this season because there are more hurricanes hitting the US in the span of a few weeks than usual. With the media, it's mostly about ratings and drama, with some objective news reporting thrown in for good measure.

I'm always more interested in what the hurricane hunters who fly their C130s into the storms are reporting in the way of measured data.

I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash.

Chev bears no responsibility for the further derailment of this thread

Speaking of Old Navy:
It's always cool to watch the Navy evacuate ships and planes from their Florida bases when hurricanes near.

Maybe they'll start to realize they cannot conquer nature...
And hopefully take the consequences of it...

I was flipping through the channels last night and came across Fox News, which of course was doing the hurricane-hoo-ha. However, instead of having Geraldo out in the storm, they had him in the studio in front of a green screen. If there is one person that should be out in a hurricane, it's Geraldo.

Ummm, The hurricane average for a single year in that geographical area is 6-8.
Don't allow yourself to think that this year is any different than other years since your granny's ass was split.
Look around the world for other occurences. Such as typhoons that kill in southeast Asia, Floods in Europe and volcanos in the Pacific Rim.
Do you believe that as Americans, we deserve to be offed by mother?

Off course other parts of the world are confronted with natural calamities as well. But I do think that's partly caused by the climate change, in which the Americans play an important role. I wasn't saying Americans deserve it (and I wasn't saying that only Americans were victims, being it a punishment from God or whatever).
I think America is lacking in the 'war against climate change', and I remember having heard somewhere that the average of tornados has increased.

Mmh, that was not a very strong statement

But to answer your question: no, I don't think you deserved it. But I think it's good to think about any possible causes (if the average has indeed increased).

The Hurricane Hunters are based out of Keesler AFB, which is less than an hour's drive away from me.

they don't 'send' people out there. they already have people in the areas(through affiliate networks). All the people you saw in melbourne are, for the most part, there through the hurricane research that is already being done there. coincidentally, I go to college in melbourne, and this is the first semester I've NOT been there since 1999.

And On that day, the Lords of the land said unto their Master Architect, "The temple you have made to the gods of Wasabi and Maki has brought us no great prosperity" and they sent out him into the lands.

As he traveled to a far off land, he found he wasn't traveling alone, but that he had gained companions, and when they found their new land, they started work on a new temple, one that would be OPEN to all who wanted to worship.

Personally, I say Bill Gates is in control of the weather and he's in really close cahoots with Bush, and he's using hurricanes to kill off all the democrats in Florida, which is why Bush has a 3% lead there.

But that's just my 2¢
