Loudspeaker crossover and phase
Hello everyone I'm new here and hope to learn a lot from you experts.
I am sorry to post about a problem as it is my first post. I have bought some new loudspeakers and built proper speaker boxes but the sound is not good. Each speaker box has a 10 inch a six inch and hi-freq speaker all are 8 ohms. The sound is very distorted at especially at high volume. A my girlfriends brother tells me to put in a crossover and phase them properly. I don't really know what he means but I did use proper red and black speaker cable. Any help or explanation I would be very grateful

A 10 inch woofer cannot handle high frequencies, so you have to filter those out for the woofer and filter the lower frequencies out for the tweeter, otherwise you'll have the distorted sound.
How exactly this must be done, I'm not sure of, I never built speakers myself, but I know you can buy filters which only let trough lower frequencies for the woofer and block the higher ones. (A crossover is a device that splits up the signal into one for the woofer and one or more for with the higher frequencies.) A friend of mine built a subwoofer himself without a filter and says it sometimes makes an odd noise. Could this be it? I hope this was of any help. Oh and by the way, make sure your speaker is very well constructed. A very sturdy construction helps eliminating noise (resonance) as well |

Just fyi in case you didn't know already, the filters in a speaker crossover usually consist of capacitors and inductors (coils of enamel-coated wire). Capacitors are good for passing high frequency signals, and inductors are good for passing low frequency signals. Therefore, a capacitor placed in series with the tweeter will help reduce low frequencies transmitted to it (the tweeter). In the same manner, an inductor placed in series with the woofer will help reduce the amount of high frequencies transmitted to it (the woofer). In the case of a midrange speaker, a capacitor and an inductor are usually used together to only allow a specific range of frequencies to be transmitted to it (the midrange speaker).
Now, this is all very general information, and I only intended it to be a sort of overview. Of course, the values for the capacitors and inductors need to be calculated using ratings from the speakers and a myriad of other things. There are plenty of online help guides for it, though. So good luck.

Thank you for your kind replies, I have read the tutorial but it doesn't say any thing about the capacitor filter.
I wish now I had bought a shop system, it's because I'm a student I did not have that sort of money I have tried a technic forum but they were very rude to me because I do not know much about electricity. I don't want to damage the speakers by trying things I don't understand so I will try another technic forum or ask at my local PC repair shop. Why people do not like young students I do not know. I think it is because they cannot make lots of money from us

Building speakers yourself is indeed a lot cheaper. Why not buy a book about it? I'm sure books about this are out there.

Never mind will. Time o' the month or something.
![]() If you run your speakers into distortion, you could damage them. If you don't have crossovers in each box, I suggest talking to the folks that sold you the speakers to get one that is appropriate for the frequency response of the speakers you have. |

Thanks Michgelsen for the tip about a book on the subject. I'll have a look on Amazon.
I don't know what to think about those ill mannered people who posted. I would just imagine their collective brain scans would reveal the following trace ____________________ |

Another tip: if your speakers are ready and working and you don't have to open them anymore, use glue with/instead of screws. Glue is much stronger and will help preventing hum.

Well if this thread still has anything to do with crossovers:
www.partsexpress.com Search for crossovers. "If everything I didn't give a shit about died, the only thing that would be left would be me, my dick, and maybe some pizza!" -Two (Visit www.ranting-gryphon.com, it rocks.) |

One or two members of this board registered at the GC forum and were cut to pieces and crept off back to their puddles to join their fellow amoebas, so if you want to engage with superior intellect at least prepare to put up or shut up. Moderators messing around and altering posts is regarded by most boards as the lowest form of wit and going by the above alterations to my posts, the bottom of the wit barrel has really had a good scraping. I doubt that this comment will provoke an intelligent response. However hopefully they will not change my rank as a Salad Tosser which although a very dull attempt at humour, does in fact have a true facet. My mixed salads are a delight
