Who has the oldest hardware in use right now.
I'm working on a project for work that requires the use of a 486 DX-40, 12Meg HD, Windows 3.1, Borland C 3.1, and a relocatable linker to generate a ROM for an 8051 microprocessor board.
Can anyone beat that? Remember, it is something that you actually use to do something productive, not something sitting in a closet. |

Why the hell would you use a 486 DX-40? A complete Pentium II system off of Ebay can be had for less than $50.
That having been said, I have a machine at work that's a pentium 100, working as an email server. Freedom of speech is the basic freedom of humanity. ^ because the linker we have won't install on a pentium... It thinks its an 8088 and it needs the 386's instruction set. Believe me, If I had a choice, I wouldn't use it, but I have to support a product.

Haha. Sweet. Did they actually remove instructions going from 486 -> Pentium? I thought they only added instructions, and it shouldn't matter in that case, right? Oh well. Best luck on getting a better compiler. ^_^

I would have thought they only added instrutions too... But when I tried to install it on a P75 system a few years back, it said something to the effect of: "This software requires a minimum of a 386 instruction set. Installation aborting."
Oh well, I only have to work with P.O.S. about once a year or so anyway. Maybe when it dies, they will break down and buy some newer software tools (or abandon that project for a more modern version!) Anybody else using old hardware? |

The main computer I usually am on (the one with all my junk, the one I'm typing on right now) Is an IBM Aptiva that started out with a PII at 233mhz, 32mb 66mhz SD Ram and a 6gig hard drive. Now its a PII at 300mhz, 320mb of ram at 100mhz (even though it doesn't matter since its downcycled) and the original 6 gig drive with a 60 attached and a cd burrner replacing the cdrom. Its running WinXP SP1 :P.

I have a 486-DX66 with 52mb of EDO RAM (all 4 slots plus the 8mb onboard full, some of the higher capacity RAM hadn't been invented yet but it detects it all). It takes about literally 40 seconds to count it all at startup. It has a 56k ISA modem (which are hard to find) and IE 5.5, Win 95, even an old version of Winamp 2 although it can't handle mp3s. It's a lovely bright orange and bright green with stickers all over it.
Before you get concerned, I also have a much never computer. |

A couple of years ago, for work we set up Firstar Bank (now US Bank) branches with new computer systems. We removed all of the teller pcs running windows and replaced them with terminals that now ran off of the OS2/Warp server in the basement.
I wonder who's idea that was? technically I guess that's not really hardware. Just ignore me. |

I still have a working TRS-80 with no hard drive, only a 5" floppy and I think 16k of ram. It's really useful for a good intense game of Pong I wrote.
